Ten Hag's team news update ahead of Forest

Monday 26 December 2022 07:00

Erik ten Hag has provided a team-news update on defensive trio Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane ahead of tomorrow's clash with Nottingham Forest (20:00 GMT).

The Reds are set to return to Premier League action against the Tricky Trees at Old Trafford, having recently booked our spot in the last-eight of the Carabao Cup with victory over Burnley last week.

Maguire missed out due to illness at the Theatre of Dreams, whilst Martinez and Varane are both yet to return from international duty, following their respective nations' battle during the World Cup final in Qatar.

Speaking first on the already-returned United players who competed in the Middle East, Erik told club media: ''The feeling is good. The players from the World Cup are back, are integrated again and you feel they are excited.

''[They had] massive impressions there [in Qatar], but now they are back, and you feel their energy.

''They are looking forward to the restart [of the Premier League].''

Maguire - who performed valiantly for England during the Three Lions' run to the quarter-finals - is expected to be back for the arrival of Steve Cooper's men on Tuesday evening.

Ten Hag provided an update on the captain's return while speaking to club media on Friday, as well as adding that he is hopeful of Martinez and Varane also being back soon.

''We had some problems with illness like Harry Maguire, but he was back on the training pitch today so I’m happy with that,'' the boss added.

''Returning from Rapha Varane and Licha Martinez, they are not there [back at United] but we hope on their comeback [soon].''
