Ten Hag reveals team news for Wednesday

Tuesday 28 February 2023 12:30

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has provided an update on his plans for Wednesday's Emirates FA Cup fifth-round clash with West Ham United.

The Reds have had little time to celebrate Sunday's Carabao Cup final success and must now concentrate on the other major domestic cup competition, welcoming the Hammers to Old Trafford for a 19:45 GMT kick-off.

With a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool to come at the weekend, there has been a feeling Erik could rotate his squad, following the draining fixture at Wembley which, itself, came hot on the heels of a fabulous victory over Barcelona in the Europa League.

Regardless, a couple of doubts have been identified and Anthony Martial remains absent.

"Of course, yesterday [Monday], the players were still enthusiastic and they had to celebrate this momentum," said Ten Hag at his pre-match press conference. "But, yesterday, after we settled down, we get back to work. What we had to do was recovery and the ones who played less did a good training session."

Versatile defender Luke Shaw and midfielder Fred, who both started all eight games in February, will need to be monitored as their participation in the game is in doubt.

"Anthony Martial is not available and Luke Shaw and Fred are questions for tomorrow [Wednesday]," confirmed the manager.

Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen are still sidelined, although the latter told us on Sunday that he hopes to be out of his protective boot soon, following an ankle operation on the injury sustained against Reading in the previous round of this competition.

United have already disposed of Everton and the Royals following home draws in the FA Cup and will strive to progress to the quarter-finals, with the tie going to extra time and penalties, if required, rather than a replay.

WEST HAM'S TEAM NEWS

Lukasz Fabianski (fractured cheekbone and eye socket) and Vladimir Coufal (heel) have both been ruled out of the trip north by manager David Moyes, after picking up injuries in the impressive 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

With Danny Ings cup-tied, Michail Antonio is set to be recalled to lead the attack, following his goal as a substitute against at the weekend. Maxwel Cornet and Kurt Zouma have been flagged as doubts, while Alphonse Areola appears likely to start in goal.

"We've got a squad available and ready to go," said ex-Reds boss Moyes. "But we've got a few injuries. I think that [Fabianski and Coufal] are really the two injuries we had from the weekend. Apart from that, the squad is just about what it was.

"We're actually waiting on a couple of boys who have got knocks as well. It's a very quick turnaround. If you look at our fixtures, it's difficult when you have to go to Old Trafford on a Wednesday and then we're away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. This one getting fitted in makes it a little more awkward."
