Mainoo can't be compared to Seedorf

Erik ten Hag believes it is unfair to compare footballers as each has their own identity and style.

The Manchester United boss was asked in an interview with international broadcasters if he was aware that some people were likening teenager Kobbie Mainoo to ex-Netherlands international Clarence Seedorf.

United legend Rio Ferdinand is one pundit who is on record as making the comparison, after playing against the now 47-year-old in the UEFA Champions League.

Seedorf enjoyed a stellar career with the likes of Ajax, Real Madrid and both Milan clubs and won 87 caps for the Netherlands.

Ten Hag is convinced that our homegrown midfielder will continue to build his own profile in the game, as he looks to maintain his promising form in the Reds' engine room.

"So I think never ever compare players with another player," stressed Erik. "Never. Because Kobbie Mainoo, but also other players, they build their own identity.

"Don't compare with anyone. His skillset, that is so typical. And it's so Kobbie Mainoo, it's nothing to do with other players.

"Of course, he can learn from other players, especially from great players as Clarence Seedorf was. But Kobbie Mainoo is Kobbie Mainoo. He has big potential and I'm quite sure he will have a big career."

Mainoo started our last game, the 2-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

The Academy product received a heartfelt ovation from the crowd when being substituted and will hope to retain his place in Sunday's much-anticipated Emirates FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool.

He started the goalless draw at Anfield in the league and has shown he has the temperament to handle what should be a white-hot atmosphere this weekend.
