Erik ten Hag has sent a message of support to former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who continues to recover from illness.

Van der Sar was moved out of intensive care at the start of this week, after the United legend suffered a bleed on the brain, while on holiday earlier this month.

In his interview ahead of the Reds' clash with Lyon at BT Murrayfield in Edinburgh on Wednesday, Ten Hag sent a heartfelt message to the man who was chief executive during his time as manager of Ajax.

"It was a real shock for everyone, in Manchester, the fans of Manchester United and in the Netherlands as well all the fans from Ajax," said Erik.

"It is devastating when you see those pictures or hear that news.

"We all have our thoughts with him and his family."

Van der Sar posted a really positive update on Twitter on Monday: "I'm happy to share that I'm no longer in the intensive care unit.

"However, I'm still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery."

Everyone at United wishes Edwin the best for his continued recovery, and we hope to see him at Old Trafford again soon.
