Ten Hag: Evans deal mutually beneficial

Wednesday 19 July 2023 13:55

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes signing Jonny Evans on a short-term deal will be mutually beneficial for both the club and the defender.

Academy graduate Evans had been training with the Under-21s following his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season.

The Northern Irishman has travelled to Edinburgh to be part of the Reds' squad for Wednesday’s friendly against Lyon at BT Murrayfield, starting on the substitutes' bench.

The centre-back will also be in the squad to face Welsh outfit Wrexham in San Diego next week.

Speaking to MUTV before kick-off against Lyon, Ten Hag was asked about Evans, who is wearing the no.27 shirt in the Scottish capital, returning to the club.

"I know him for a long time, so I know his place was here, in Manchester,” the boss said.
“He came to train with us, to work on his fitness, and when I said: yeah, not all the players are in - internationals are out, still having their break, so I thought it was a good idea to help each other out. Jonny can work on his fitness and he can help us out.

“The level, we know he is a really experienced player but also a very good person, a big personality, and I think he has big authority as well. He will help the young players especially. It is a benefit for both sides."
