Ten Hag targets a summer of progress

Sunday 04 June 2023 07:00

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag believes we have an important summer on the horizon, with progress necessary to continue moving forward.

Talking to the media after our narrow FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, the Dutchman believes the bridge between this season and next term will be a period of  paramount importance if we’re to push on and compete for the top honours.

“I think it’s not Manchester City now [who are the ones to beat], there are seven, eight competitors in the Premier League,” he said.

“We have to analyse the season and what we have to do better, and then from July go again.

“[Our 2022/23 success] creates expectations, but we have to do better and we have to make progress during the summer.

“That means we have to demand much more from the players if we want to compete like we did today and to not only compete but also win.”
Despite missing out on a cup double to see out the season, the boss expressed his pride with the direction we are heading in.

“I don’t think today is a time for criticism,” he told BBC Five Live. “I’m very proud of my team because of how they fought in this game and also during the whole season.

“They played a brilliant season so you can’t be more satisfied than that.”

Disappointed not to have won the FA Cup for the fans, Bruno is determined to build on this season's progress.

In a further interview, he added: “I think we have to emphasise today that we’ve made huge progress. I think you can’t expect more than what we [achieved] this season.

“The team, the individuals, the whole club, the togetherness with the fans. It’s amazing.”

Ten Hag's men are next due in action on Wednesday 19 July, when French club Olympique Lyonnais provide the opposition in a pre-season game at Murrayfield n Edinburgh.

Tickets for that game are on general sale now and all of the Reds' summer friendlies will be shown live on MUTV.
