Ten Hag explains United line-up against Burnley

Wednesday 21 December 2022 19:00

Erik ten Hag has named his Manchester United side for our Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Burnley at Old Trafford this evening.

In a side featuring five of our World Cup players, Ten Hag has opted to deploy Brazil midfielder Casemiro alongside Victor Lindelof at the heart of our defence this evening. Bruno Fernandes captains the team in the absence of Harry Maguire who is ill.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka comes in for his first start of the season at right-back, with Diogo Dalot being ruled out through an injury he picked up during Portugal's last game in Qatar.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho look set to occupy the two wide positions to begin with, while Anthony Martial leads the line in attack, bidding to add to his tally of four strikes so far this season.

Ten Hag discusses his selection for this evening's game and explains the absences of Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire...

Speaking to MUTV before the game, Ten Hag explained the reasons why Dalot and Maguire are both unavailable.

''[Diogo] Dalot had some complaints, he felt them during his last game with Portugal and Harry unfortunately is ill," said the manager.

With Lindelof being the only recognised centre-back in the team, Erik admitted "it is an issue" in that area of the team. FA Youth Cup-winning captain Rhys Bennett provides back-up from the bench.

''Rapha [Raphael Varane] and Licha [Lisandro Martinez] were involved in the World Cup final," added the boss. "We picked Casemiro [there] as he has played more often there, but also Luke [Shaw] has also [offered] to play there too which is really good.

"They are all committed and they want to play, they are hungry and I like that. Also, last week, Rhys Bennett played against Everton [behind closed doors] and he did really well, so we have options there, but tonight Casemiro will play there.''

United are bidding to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since the 20/21 campaign, have been eliminated by West Ham United in the third round last season.

Vincent Kompany's side will no doubt present a tough test at Old Trafford, with his team currently occupying top spot in the Championship.
