Ten Hag's top 10 wins so far

Sunday 07 July 2024 08:00

With Erik ten Hag's contract at Manchester United being extended through to June 2026, now is the perfect time to relive some of the best moments he has delivered for the Reds so far.

The Dutchman was announced as United boss back in April 2022 and has brought home a trophy in each of his first two seasons, first the Carabao Cup in 2022/23 followed by the recent FA Cup triumph against cross-town rivals Manchester City at Wembley last season.

Amid that consistent collection of silverware have been a whole host of incredible wins and exciting moments with the Ten Hag at the helm.

With news of the manager's contract extension, eyes will naturally gravitate towards the future. But first, let's take a look back through some of the Dutchman's most memorable wins so far...

Ten Hag's best wins

We've selected ten games from Erik's tenure that we feel sum up the boss' true grit and determination.

Premier League: United 2 Liverpool 1
Old Trafford, 22 August 2022

A tough start to Old Trafford life saw Ten Hag facing our rivals from Merseyside on the back of two difficult results against Brighton and Brentford. That didn't faze the Dutchman though, earning his first league win against a solid Jurgen Klopp side.

Ten Hag said: "I wanted a different approach, I wanted a different attitude, and that is what they bring on the pitch. That's what makes me satisfied but it is only the start, we have to keep humble."

Premier League: United 3 Arsenal 1
Old Trafford, 4 September 2022

Away wins against Southampton and Leicester City followed the manager's maiden Liverpool victory. Another early test was just around the corner in Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, but the Dutchman passed with flying colours.

Ten Hag said: "I must say Arsenal played well, but we defend well. And I never had the feeling they would break us."

Premier League: United 2 Manchester City 1
Old Trafford, 14 January 2023

The theme of strong home showings in Ten Hag's first season continued into his second bite at the Manchester derby. Defeat at the Etihad earlier in the campaign made this comeback victory in M16 all the sweeter.

The boss said: "I think we have seen it, all in this process, always going, there is fight and spirit in this team. They can deal with setbacks. There was a difficult stage of the came but came stronger and stronger."

Europa League: United 2 Barcelona 1
Old Trafford, 23 February 2023

A hard-fought draw at Camp Nou set up an enticing second-leg clash back in Manchester the following week. A Robert Lewandowski opener meant more of that fighting spirit was required and Brazilian duo Fred and Antony duly came up with the goods.

Ten Hag said: "We always enjoy it, really, to play at Old Trafford. Even more, of course, than away games, because of that ambience that is magnificent to play in, in this theatre. We really love it."

Antony notched the all-important winner against Barca to send the Reds through to the Europa League round of 16.

Carabao Cup: United 2 Newcastle United 0
Wembley Stadium, 26 February 2023

There was scarcely any time to bask in the glory of defeating Barca in the week, as Ten Hag had his first major final with the Reds to contend with that weekend. Two first-half goals, a clean sheet and the manager's first United trophy in the bag. Professional job.

The Dutchman said: "We have to suffer. We have to sacrifice every day to win trophies. It's about glory and honour and, if you want to win something, you have to do it. Otherwise, you don't get it."

Premier League: Everton 0 United 3
Goodison Park, 26 November 2023

This game will be remembered for one thing: that Garnacho goal. However, also worth nothing is the hostile atmosphere the Reds faced as the Toffees' first opponent following their Premier League points deduction, handled expertly by Ten Hag and his side.

The boss said: "There was another example of how this team can play, how you can quiet the crowd but also make an impact on an opponent. So be brave, be proactive, be dynamic."

Ten Hag only needed one attempt to collect his first silverware for United.

Premier League: United 3 Aston Villa 2
Old Trafford, 26 December 2023

The Villans headed into the interval on Boxing Day cruising with a two-goal advantage, but words in the dressing room from the Dutchman inspired an almighty revival. A Garnacho brace put us on level terms, before Rasmus Hojlund completed the comeback with his first Premier League goal.

Ten Hag said: "We said keep going and believing in ourselves, and I said that is what I demand from a team. I said it before the game, I said it during half-time. Keep believing and we will win this game."

Premier League: United 3 West Ham United 0
Old Trafford, 4 February 2024

Another strong home showing saw Ten Hag's men brush the Hammers aside. But it was the manager's faith in youth that was the key takeaway from this game, captured neatly in Hojlund, Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo's iconic celebration sat on top of the Old Trafford advertising hoardings, one which was recreated for our 2024/25 kit launch.

The boss said: "They [Garnacho, Hojlund and Mainoo] need, of course, games. They need experience, and the only way you can get this is to play in that first team and to get the opposition, and then adapt."

FA Cup: United 4 Liverpool 3 (AET)
Old Trafford, 17 March 2024

It will go down as one of the most nail-biting encounters any United fan will live through, and it means so much more now we know the ending of that cup run. The Dutchman never gave up and it paid off in the most spectacular fashion, with Amad's last-gasp winner sending us through to the semi-final.

Ten Hag said: "Maybe it can be very important [the win against Liverpool] to win another trophy. But, in the end, it's winning the trophies and getting results."

FA Cup: Manchester City 1 United 2
Wembley Stadium, 25 May 2024

The second-ever all-Manchester FA Cup final, just a year after the first, is likely down as Ten Hag's greatest United achievement to date. Both Reds scorers - Garnacho and Mainoo - were promoted from our Academy by the Dutchman, and made the difference against our rivals to win England's primary domestic cup competition. Perfection.

The boss said: "Two trophies in two years, it's not bad. Two [FA Cup] finals, it's not bad. But we have to keep going. I'm not satisfied with it. We have to do better."
