Malacia closing in on return to action

Erik ten Hag has provided a much-anticipated update on Tyrell Malacia's return to action with Manchester United.

The left-back's long absence has been a source of intrigue to supporters during recent months, but the manager's encouraging comments hint that the 24-year-old is not too far away from playing again.

Malacia was an important part of the squad last season, making 39 appearances across all competitions.

However, he is yet to feature in 2023/24 and, with Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka having recent issues with injury, the former Feyenoord defender would be a welcome option for Ten Hag.

When journalists specifically asked about Malacia in the pre-Luton media briefing at Carrington, the boss gave a little more detail about the player's problems before offering an update on his potential return date.

"He had setbacks during his rehab process," explained Erik. "It takes too long, it's bad for him. Bad for us.

"But now we've turned a point and it's positive – he will return soon on the pitch. I don't think then it will take long before he's returning in the team training."
Ten Hag grouped Malacia with fellow absentee Mason Mount, implying that both were only "some weeks" away from rejoining the squad.

Tyrell played 22 times in the Premier League last season – notably starting the 2-1 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford – and could provide a boost to our push to claim a top-four place.

Last weekend's 2-1 win against Aston Villa keeps the Reds close behind Tottenham Hotspur and Villa, in fourth and fifth places respectively, with 14 games still to play.
