Ten Hag’s update on Martinez

Friday 29 March 2024 12:30

Erik ten Hag says there is a chance that Lisandro Martinez will be in Manchester United’s squad to face Brentford on Saturday night.

The defender has been sidelined since sustaining a knee injury against West Ham on 4 February, shortly after his welcome return from a foot issue that kept him out for much of the season’s opening half.

Martinez joined up with the Argentina squad over the international break to continue his rehabilitation, and now our no.6 could be ready to make his return as United’s Premier League campaign resumes this weekend.

“Yes, there is a chance [Lisandro will be in the squad],” Ten Hag told reporters in the first part of his pre-match press conference, earlier this afternoon.

“We have missed him [in] every game because he brings a composure in the team and a calmness in the team and, at the same time, a winning attitude.

“He can express this very clearly, he can transfer that to the team and that contributes to our levels.”
The boss held his cards close to his chest otherwise when asked about team news in part one, with no clues given on the availability of recent absentees Altay Bayindir, Casemiro, Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire.

Amad will serve his one-match suspension, having been shown a second yellow card for removing his shirt after scoring the winner against Liverpool in our last fixture, while Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw remain out.

Ten Hag was asked about Shaw in his media briefing, with our no.23 a player that he expects to have back before the term concludes.

“Yes, I expect him back, I think before the end of the season,” Erik said.

“That is the plan, and he is still on schedule for this. He will return into our team.”

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, head coach Thomas Frank said Saturday's game will come too soon for recent absentees Aaron Hickey (hamstring), Christian Norgaard (back), Ethan Pinnock (ankle) and Kevin Schade (adductor).

Bryan Mbeumo, who has seven goals for the club so far this season, returned from a long-term ankle injury as a substitute in the Bees' final fixture before the recent international break and featured in an in-house match on Thursday, as he awaits his first start since December.

Full-back Sergio Reguilon, who spent the first half of the campaign on loan with the Reds is suspended, while his defensive counterparts Rico Henry and Ben Mee are sidelined for the remainder of 2023/24. The same can be said for midfielder Josh Dasilva.
