Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was more than pleased with his side's winning start to the new season, as the Reds beat Fulham 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Joshua Zirkzee's debut goal sent the home crowd into pure pandemonium, as he tapped home Alejandro Garnacho's cross from the right.

Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Zirkzee's fellow new arrival Noussair Mazraoui all shined as United picked up all three points in front of a packed-out crowd in M16.

Ten Hag: We are pleased for Zirkzee

Erik speaks to MUTV with satisfaction, after his team kicked off the new top-flight season with three points...

ZIRKZEE'S IMPACT?
"It doesn't matter if he's Dutch, English or Russian or South American, he is a Manchester United player. It is very good for a striker to come into Manchester United and to score the winning goal in his first game. Remember last season, when Rasmus Hojlund in his first Old Trafford Premier League game, scored a goal and we're all waiting on the halfway line with VAR and after two minutes they came to the conclusion the ball was over the line. It took too long and we were so frustrated. We are very happy with him, it is very pleasing and we are very happy with him. It is also encouraging and it will give him courage and belief - and for the fans. It is a very good start."

WHY BRING HIM TO THE CLUB?
"He has some attributes we didn't have, straight away he showed that. He is very good in his linking up and combinations and we have some good ball-playing offensive players and they can take benefit from this. But that is what I wanted to say, he has to arrive in the box. He has to arrive in the box and score goals, he did and the winner is very pleasing for everyone."

INTEGRATING HIM INTO THE SQUAD
"We looked to everyone individually on the right programme and he had an injury at the end of his career in Bologna. At first he wasn't selected initially for the Euros and then a player dropped out, so they selected him. He came from his holiday after the Euros. We decided he has to build up his fitness and he had some deficits. He has had an individual programme to build up his fitness and we then had to bring him into the team training."

AN UPDATE ON SANCHO
"First of all we need squad depth and we need it this season to be survival of the fittest. I can only put 20 players in the squad, I have to make choices and in the week, he had an ear infection but he was not 100 per cent fit. He could play but if we had the choices, we preferred to put other players on the bench but that will change in the season as we have to rotate, because we can't play so many games the same. You see how important the subs are and you see it is about balance. Sometimes it is frustrating about the team, the club and there will be more players in this position. We expect them to fight for the club, as we have so many games to play for the club. Everyone will get their minutes and then they have to prove it."

Five of Erik ten Hag's players received more than 10 per cent of the fan vote after United beat Fulham.

WORRYING TO NOT SCORE?
"I think one space that we have to fill is to kill in the box. You saw it in the friendlies and you saw it against City last week, we create enough chances and we have to not wait for a later winner. We could have been earlier in a winning position and we have to be more composed and learn to kill in front of goal."

WHY IS THAT?
"This is also maybe because it is the start of the season and players have to come into full speed. We have enough players in the squad who have scoring abilities and mostly important is we created the chances."

Joshua Zirkzee sums up his emotions after an Old Trafford debut to remember, in which he netted a late winner...

GARNACHO ON THE BENCH?
"I explained the same about Zirkzee, it is the same about Alejandro, you saw his background, he played in an FA Cup final and then in Copa America. He had one game and then he had his break. He needed a break and we had to bring him into the tour. Fitness-wise, it would have been the best decision to be in the tour, to work on his fitness. After a long season as a young player, he needed a break. He came late into pre-season and we have players in wide areas who have performed very well. That is why he started on the bench. It is the same story about Zirkzee, Sancho, Garnacho too. He will have his minutes and he will have starts. That will come in the coming weeks, months."

CASEMIRO'S ROLE?
"As a midfielder he has to defend and attack, everyone knows Casemiro is also a brilliant passer and I think his performance all over was very good, exactly what we expect from him. A good organiser, good at interceptions, good in duels and he is good in duels and he is also good in the passes."
