Erik ten Hag

Every word from Erik's press conference

Sunday 18 February 2024 21:09

Erik ten Hag was more than impressed with his side's performance at Kenilworth Road, as the Reds earned a 2-1 win against Luton Town in the Premier League.

Rasmus Hojlund's brace inside seven minutes set United on the way early on, before Carlton Morris grabbed one back to reduce the deficit.

Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes all had chances to improve our tally during the second period, but couldn't find a way past Thomas Kaminski in the Hatters goal.

Following our triumph in Bedfordshire, Ten Hag spoke to the media on a range of different topics and below you can read and watch everything the Dutchman had to say...

Erik's post-match press conference

Press conference | Ten Hag speaks about Mainoo's mature display, the half-time subs and United's fast start at Luton...

YOUNG PLAYERS STANDING OUT
"Yes of course, we are pleased with the performances from the both of them, they performed very well. I think Kobbie [Mainoo] as well was very mature. He is progressing from game to game, hopefully that process will keep going on and on."

SUBBING MAGUIRE AND CASEMIRO
"I think the game was going in that direction, there was a lot of pressure on the referee. They were both at risk of another booking, we have good replacements with Jonny Evans and Scott McTominay, so that's we took them off. We didn't want to go with that risk."
THREE STRAIGHT PREMIER LEAGUE WINS
"Fragile [at times], because we didnt take the chances, I think we should have scored many more goals. After 2-0 there were big chances for Rashford and Garnacho, it could have been 3-0, 4-0. We dropped too deep and we allowed them some crosses and a lot of shots and some chances. After half-time they of course upped the pressure. We missed some really massive chances and we should of scored and we know that. On the other hand, Luton Town have lost games this season, but only two times by more than two, so it is not easy here. Apart from last week their performances and their results are very good. The way we started was perfect and that's the way we want to do it, it was a perfect game plan but the only thing we didn't do is be more clinical in front of goal. We must score more goals because today we could have easily scored five goals."

CASEMIRO'S DISCIPLINE

"I spoke already with him, but it looks like even when he is not touching opponents, he is getting booked. Often in the first moment in the game and I think today this was similar. I think his first booking is so unfair. The referee could have easily given him a second booking and that is why we took him off. It is difficult then to [be cautious] when you haven't even touched an opponent. Then you get booked."

The boss explains why he was forced into a first-half change regarding our no.23.

HOJLUND'S FORM
"We are very happy with our recruitment, but we need the right characters because he can perform under stress. When things go against him like in the first half of the season, he has the abilities and the character to be resilient. He is determined to score goals and that is what we scouted him. He needed some support, as it is not easy when you are young. But in general he kept calm and you can see his abilities. I want to also mention that in the start he didn't have some luck. He scored some goals, for instance the one against Brighton and it was disallowed and nobody knows why. Those moments are important, especially when you come into a new league, especially for a striker to build some confidence. He is a fighter and he keeps going and he has great abilities in front of goal."

MORE TO COME FROM RASMUS
"There are many areas where he can improve, but he has scoring abilities and that is clear. I think from September onwards we have seen that he is here and he is proving this in many other areas, like holding up the ball."

HAPPY TO HAVE CASEMIRO BACK
"You can see now he is back in the team, he gives so much to the team, organisation and calmness. We are very happy because since he has been back it lifts the levels."

SHAW UPDATE
"It was not a knock, no."
