Every word from Erik's post-match press conference

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag sat down for an in-depth chat with the press after our crazy seven-goal thriller against Wolves.

Kobbie Mainoo's late winner helped the Reds steal the show, following earlier goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund that had earned United a two-goal lead.

Scott McTominay also found the net, some 60 seconds after his second-half introduction, before the home side charged back to level the game at 3-3 in the dying stages.

On a night where there was plenty to discuss, Erik addressed numerous issues with the media after the game...

Press conference | The boss is asked about Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and more following our win in Wolverhampton...

Erik, the look on your face when Kobbie scored that goal says a lot. What was in your mind at that moment and did you know he had that capability?
"I'll be honest, I had mixed feelings. On one side, I was very pleased, of course it is a massive win this, and I think for a neutral fan and spectator of this game, it was great to see. But, as a manager, when you see [your team] dominate the game for an hour, we should have been three or four-nil up by the hour. We had the chances and we conceded nothing. Then the way we concede the goals, we should manage that better on the pitch. This can't happen. Then you see the spirit and resilience from the team and especially then in the person of Kobbie Mainoo. It is great to see and it is great to see that we have the right character in the dressing room, [that] the spirit is also very good, where you can show this."

Marcus Rashford seemed to respond well as well. What did you make of his performance?
"I think the whole team played very well, Rashy as well, and he knows that. You see in the last games he is coming alive in the frontline and if they [the strikers] get the service from the back, they are a threat for every opposition."
You played arguably your strongest-ever team today. Do you think that is reflected in the first-half performance? Because the first-half performance was arguably one of the best from the team this season?
"I think this was the case for the first sixty minutes. We then after that dropped the levels, but for us it was a little bit logically, because some players are not 100 per cent match fit with games. It takes games to get into that 100 per cent level of fitness. As I said, some of the routines are still not there, but we should manage the game better. I was very pleased with the first 60 minutes of this game."

And just on Kobbie, you had in him in one of your early squads, when did you first notice he was a talent that you wanted to develop and bring into the first-team quite quickly?
"I think very quickly when I saw him. I saw him last autumn for this first time and in that moment I thought he was playing a little bit too comfortable, playing in the Under-21s. I thought he should be a lot more dominant and we pushed him a lot and on that side. We also showed him in the training and now you see he makes such progress and he is now almost progressing from game to game. As I said, it is wonderful to see and I hope he stays calm, like he is, as he did with his goal as well. He is determined, he is a good character and hopefully he can keep going in this progress."

Read our account of a thrilling, hugely stressful evening at Molineux, that resulted in a brilliant win for the Reds.

You switched to a five-man defence at the end, was that because of injury? What did you also make of Wolves' late equaliser, as it felt like your team almost committed too much to the attack and then conceded on transition?
"We should have managed this better, but it was already like this after the penalty situation. We were in the press and they beat our press and it was actually similar to the goal we conceded at Newport, the second one. We have to hammer this out of the team, such mistakes. It can't happen and we had some more stages in games this season as well. What is asked in this moment is leadership on the pitch and it can't be that this happens and that you concede such goals. In the end, that is one story, as I said, I have mixed feelings about this but I am very pleased with the team performance and also some individual performances as well from our side."

Erik, you have been frustrated a few times this season with those periods of vulnerability, even in games when you dominate for large periods. What do you put that down too? You have mentioned leadership there... is it players switching off? What is it?
"It is more of those things, switching off, but it is also switching off when you are up, keeping the ball. Save the ball and we want too much of wanting another goal. Instead of keeping the ball, let the opponent run and now we go for goal, which has too much risk in losing the ball and we encourage opponents which makes us run more. Also especially now in this moment where the players in the team are not 100 per cent fit, you get split as a team and it is quite naive. When you are up and leading a game you should not run forward – just stay calm and keep the ball and make sure the defensive organisation is good."
