Amorim's press conference in full
Ruben Amorim has conducted the first part of his press conference, looking ahead to Saturday's Premier League game against Nottingham Forest.
Our head coach was asked about the outpouring of emotion for legendary staff member Kath Phipps, who sadly passed away on Thursday, to begin the briefing.
He also talked generally about his team, our position in the table and what the fans expect to see - in the short and long term.
Here is a recap of what he had to say at the Jimmy Murphy Centre...
Part one: Press conference v Forest
Press conference part one | Ruben Amorim discusses Kath Phipps, the latest team news and Saturday's match...
"We feel it today, it's a sad day. Everyone talks about lady Kath. I met here seven years ago, during my internship. She was the lady behind the reception and you feel it, the love. The way Darren Fletcher speaks about her, she was a really important person here that represents everything the club is - friendly, professional, taking care of everybody. So it is a sad day for us."
Looking ahead to tomorrow's game, are there any players back available - Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans, what's the situation with them?
"Jonny's still not training. Victor returned to training but is not available for tomorrow, maybe the next game, he will be available. Licha [Lisandro Martinez] and Kobbie [Mainoo] are returning for the team so we are prepared for the game."
"Yeah, it's sad because it's very competitive in this league. It changes all the time with just one result and, sometimes, when you're doing progress, you can do so much and then you see this kind of result. We have to pass this phase. So I can feel the same way because, before the Arsenal game, you guys were asking about the top four and now we return to this position. Nowadays, it's like that and we have to manage expectations and, at the same time, when we have a bad result, we have to be calm and continue to do the job that we are doing."
Is that the key to it? Tomorrow won't be an easy game but you need a consistent run of results to go from 14th, 13th, 12th to 6th, 7th or 8th?
"I think that is very clear. If you see nowadays, in one week, we have three games and it can change the image of the team, the perception of the team. And the team in the table. In one week, it can change a lot. It's like that, we need to have consistency in the way we focus on the job, on training. Then the result, you don't control, but then you can feel that you can win three matches to see a big gap in the table."
"More or less, yes. You have an idea but then you have the problem of players returning without training and then you have to manage the load. So you also have the same problem but then you have to imagine and understand what kind of player you have. Bruno Fernandes, you feel it, against Arsenal, in the end, he was a little bit tired but you know he is going to recover very well. Manuel Ugarte, I've known for so long, I know that he needs sometimes a little bit more time. So we are in that process, to know the players and try to manage that, but we're getting closer to an idea, yes."
Ruben, so many games for you already and so very little time on the training pitches but have you been impressed with how significantly United have improved out of possession? Is that the foundation you can build on?
"I think that is the key point for us. We have to understand our supporters, in just two weeks and four matches, they just want to see effort in the first moment. And then to win games, after a while, with effort in winning games. They will want to see a dominant team. These are the phases we have to follow. This one is the easy one - effort, full effort, full sprint back, full sprint forward. It is a key point for us and the focus is a lot on that."
Amorim 'close' to knowing best XI
ArticleThe Portuguese says that he and his coaches are learning 'really fast' about the players now at their disposal.
Every defeat can be a win if you turn it into a lesson so what were the big ones extracted from the Arsenal game?
"It's really hard, they are not the same with wins. I'm really focused on performance and I learned a lot against Everton. We won 4-0 but you can see so many things that are wrong. I saw the same things against Arsenal. Of course, we have to improve on set-pieces and we try it in the indoor stadium. We spend there a lot of time but we need time to think about things. We don't have the time to train sometimes on our structure. We have one game and then, next day, recovery and then we have to prepare for our next opponents. It's really hard to manage everything but I feel, when I see the team, that we are improving in certain aspects."
You've obviously got a squad coming back and players are getting fit so are you learning about the players every single day or learning more on a matchday? You're changing with the squad rotation a lot so are you learning, moving forwards, who you can trust on a weekly basis?
"I trust in every one of them. What I'm understanding in training, in games, is each position they play better. What kind of situation is better for one guy to another. These things, I need to be close to them, I need to see games from the dugout, as you say, not on TV. So I'm learning and I think we, as staff, are learning really fast what they are able to do or not. We are trying to find out everything in a fast pace."
