Exclusive injury update on Greenwood from the boss

Wednesday 15 July 2020 14:00

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided us with an exclusive update on flourishing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, ahead of Thursday’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

We can confirm the 18-year-old youth product has a swollen ankle from the midweek match against Southampton, when a shocking challenge from Oriol Romeu surprisingly went unpunished by the match officials.

Keen to help the team in an important match, Greenwood bravely played on through the pain until he was eventually replaced by Daniel James after 84 minutes at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer was annoyed by Romeu's 'tackle' and told reporters on Monday night the same challenge to his own ankle would have left him injured for a month.

Thankfully, Greenwood has youth and energy on his side, although the in-form goalscorer has not escaped unharmed, as Ole explained to our reporter Stewart Gardner in an exclusive interview that you can read in full on Thursday morning.

"I'll give Luke [Shaw] as much time as possible - him and Mason, their ankles are swollen and a bit blown up," the boss explains. "I'll give them as much recovery time as possible to give them a chance. Brandon [Williams] should be fine, he has a gash over the eye but if he can see out of it then... we've not trained obviously this morning yet but we'll hopefully have two, maybe all three of them."

Discussing the challenge on Greenwood and how it could have been worse, Ole continues: "In the heat of the moment he'll play on and adrenaline gets you going, and then you get a little bit of reaction after. I said after the game that my ankles were a bit weak after many years of football. But obviously Mason carried on and I think it should have been looked upon by the referee definitely."

Greenwood has featured in all seven of United’s matches since the restart on 19 June, started the Reds’ previous five Premier League games and, impressively, scored four goals during that time.

His tally for the season now stands at 16 goals and that number is just five shy of our top scorers Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, with the trio contributing 58 strikes between them so far.

It remains to be seen if Mason will have the opportunity to score again on Thursday night when United take on Palace at Selhurst Park, where the line-ups will be announced at 19:15 BST.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Solskjaer discussed his selection plans for the game.

“The team selection for Thursday is based on Thursday, not on Sunday. Sunday is irrelevant, it doesn't come into my head at all. It's just Thursday, so we'll see.

“The injury situation, there was a couple of doubts before the Southampton one, but they all reported fit on the day. And hopefully we can give them time now and not having to leave players out of injury, but as you say, there might be one or two fresh legs coming in.”
