Which Red did Rangnick previously try to sign?

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is excited to work with a squad that has a “great balance of youth and experience”, including one player he has previously tried to sign.

During our exclusive interview with the German at Old Trafford, the 63-year-old innovator speaks enthusiastically about our group of players and his plans for the remainder of this season.

When pressed on his comments in Monday’s club statement praising the quality of our squad, Rangnick responds by revealing there is one player he tried to recruit whilst with a former club.
“I am very excited,” Ralf tells club reporter Stewart Gardner with a smile. “I mean, they have so many top, talented young players – Jadon Sancho I know from the German Bundesliga.

“As a matter of fact, I met him when he was 17, in London. At the time, we were trying to convince him to come to Leipzig and he decided a couple of months later to come to [Borussia] Dortmund, which was not a wrong step from his perspective.

“Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, there are so many top, talented young players in the squad and, on top of that, the experienced top players. To work with those kind of players and to help them to get better, yeah, I’m very much looking forward to that.”

Sancho famously joined Borussia Dortmund on transfer deadline day in August 2017, when he left Manchester City's Academy at a time when he was yet to make a first-team appearance.

Jadon reportedly had a number of clubs interested in his services, including Rangnick's Leipzig, but his decision to join Dortmund was justified when he quickly became a star player in their no.7 shirt.

Of course, four seasons, 137 appearances, 57 assists and 50 goals later, Sancho returned to English football when completing his transfer to United, where he can now look forward to learning from Rangnick.

The livewire winger produced another impressive performance in the 3-2 win over Arsenal on Thursday, carrying on the sort of form that earned him a place on our shortlist for November's Player of the Month.
