Confirmed: United's next FA Cup opponents

Wednesday 07 February 2024 22:25

Manchester United will travel to Nottingham Forest in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round, following tonight's replay at the City Ground.

The date and time of our away tie were already confirmed as Wednesday 28 February at 19:45 GMT.

Should the Reds beat Forest and progress in the competition, our Premier League home game against Sheffield United on Saturday 16 March will be postponed, as the FA Cup quarter-finals will be played that weekend.

Forest briefly lived up to their tag of favourites in the replay by taking an early lead through Divock Origi. The former Liverpool striker, on loan from Milan, found the net in the eighth minute when Felipe flicked on a Morgan Gibbs-White corner.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo's side were only in front until ex-Derby County midfielder Jason Knight fired the Championship club's equaliser past Matt Turner just six minutes later.

The original meeting at Ashton Gate ended 0-0 and chances were again scarce as the remaining 76 minutes of normal time in the replay failed to produce any further goals. It was the same story in extra time, as the game ended 1-1 and was settled by a shoot-out with Forest eventually winning 5-3 on penalties.
United faced Forest five times in 2023, winning both legs of our Carabao Cup semi-final as well as the Premier League meetings at the City Ground in April and Old Trafford in August. The East Midlands club triumphed 2-1 on their turf in the most recent encounter, on 30 December.

Our head-to-head record in the FA Cup heavily favours Forest, as they won the first four ties between the clubs in 1935 (after a replay), 1947, 1981 and 1989 - all without conceding a goal.

In fact, the Reds' only strike against them in the competition so far is a famous one. Mark Robins's winner at the City Ground in January 1990 has been mythologised as saving Sir Alex Ferguson's job at United - his side went on to win the FA Cup that year, the first of his incredible 38 trophies as our manager.

Was this our most crucial third-round tie?
