FA Cup: Fourth-round fixtures revealed

Monday 06 January 2020 19:40

Manchester United or Wolverhampton Wanderers will face Tranmere Rovers or Watford away in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The tie was one of 16 drawn out of the hat in the build-up to the last third-round fixture between Arsenal and Leeds United.

The winners of our replay against Wolves, at Old Trafford on a date still to be confirmed, will visit Prenton Park or Vicarage Road between Friday 24 and Monday 27 January.

In the absence of any major giantkillings, League One side Tranmere Rovers produced arguably the biggest upset of the third round by coming from 3-0 down at Watford to hold the Hornets to a thrilling 3-3 draw.

If you're looking for more action, then here are 20 minutes of highlights from Saturday's cup tie at Wolves...

Should Micky Mellon's underdogs go one better in their replay and beat the Premier League side, and United see off Wolves at the second attempt, then it would set up only the second competitive meeting between the Wirral club and the Reds.

Our only previous clash with Tranmere in any competition came on 1 September 1976 when Tommy Docherty's men romped to an emphatic 5-0 win at Old Trafford. Gerry Daly (2), Stuart Pearson, Gordon Hill and current MUTV pundit Lou Macari were United's scorers in the League Cup second-round match.

Watford are much more familiar opponents of course, having hosted and beaten us 2-0 in the Premier League just three days before Christmas. Our 33 meetings in all competitions include six in the FA Cup, the latest being the 2007 semi-final when Wayne Rooney (2), Cristiano Ronaldo and Kieran Richardson all found the net in a comfortable 4-1 victory at Villa Park.
