Why United have only one league game in January

Tuesday 12 December 2023 15:00

Manchester United's schedule for the first month of 2024 has been reduced to just two matches in all competitions, at least for now, following the latest release of fixtures on live TV in the UK.

The reason is that our Premier League away clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers has been moved from Tuesday 30 January to Thursday 1 February, when it will kick off at 20:15 GMT and be shown on TNT Sports.

Our home game against West Ham United was provisionally scheduled for just two days later, on Saturday 3 February. We can confirm that a new date for this fixture will be announced in due course.

Facing Wolves on 1 February means Bruno Fernandes is set to mark the fourth anniversary of his debut by playing against the same opponents. Our winter signing from Sporting Lisbon first appeared for the Reds in a 0-0 draw with Wolves at Old Trafford back in 2020.

There are currently only two fixtures on our 2024 calendar before the 1 February meeting at Molineux. On Monday 8 January, we'll make the much shorter trip to Wigan Athletic for our Emirates FA Cup third-round tie. Kick-off in that one is also set for 20:15 GMT.

If Erik ten Hag's men defeat the Latics at the DW Stadium, another match will be added to the schedule - the fourth-round games will be played across the weekend of 27 and 28 January.

Should the Reds not progress in the competition, our only other January assignment will be the Premier League home encounter with Tottenham Hotspur. That contest has already been selected for live TV coverage in the UK, on Sky Sports, and will therefore be played at 16:30 GMT on Sunday 14 January.
