Colin Webster awarded league winners' medal

Former United great, Colin Webster, has become the final player to be honoured by the club and awarded a retrospective championship winners' medal.

Webster, who sadly passed away in 2001 at the age of 68, was one of 18 players who missed out on a medal due to qualifying criteria which has now been updated by the English Football League. Players with five or more appearances for league-winning teams are now entitled to recognition – and these new rules have been applied retrospectively to historic championships.

Welsh international, Webster, made 79 appearances for United and was also at the club at the time of the Munich Air Disaster, although did not travel with the team due to ill health. The 1956/57 First Division medal was presented to Colin’s brother-in-law and three nephews by fellow Welshman and former United winger Mickey Thomas.

The moment marks the end of an important project undertaken by the club to ensure that its former players were rightfully recognised for their achievements.
Webster played for United between 1952 and 1958.
In total, 21 league medals were awarded to 18 former players, with goalkeeper David Gaskell being the recipient of his medals in June 2023 when United legends Alex Stepney and Mickey Thomas made the journey to David’s home in Wrexham to present the medals.

Followed shortly by 1968 European Cup winner David Sadler who received his 1964/65 First Division medal at his home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, in August 2023.

Sir Alex Ferguson was on hand to present further medals later that month, as the club invited players and family representatives to Old Trafford for a special pitchside presentation before our Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.
The full list of medals that have been awarded are:

1951-52 First Division: Frank Clempson, Harry McShane, Jack Crompton

1966-67 First Division: David Gaskell, Jimmy Ryan, John Connelly, Shay Brennan
