United legends taking part in Soccer Aid

Sunday 12 June 2022 13:00

Former Manchester United players will be among the famous names taking to the field at West Ham’s London Stadium this Sunday evening for Soccer Aid 2022.

Created in 2006, Soccer Aid brings together celebrities and former professional footballers for an England vs Soccer Aid World XI match to raise money for global children's charity UNICEF, with whom United have a long-standing partnership.

Earlier this year, the Reds donated £50,000 to UNICEF’S Children’s Emergency Fund and last month first-team players Bruno Fernandes and Victor Lindelof launched their own fundraiser in aid of UNICEF’s Ukraine Appeal.

Soccer Aid for UNICEF helps improve children’s lives around the world. Money raised helps to provide vaccines, fight malnutrition, and provide safe spaces to protect children in times of crisis.

This year, every donation made to Soccer Aid for UNICEF is being matched by The Power of Nutrition, a charity dedicated to providing health and nutrition to children across the globe.

Kick-off at the London Stadium is 19:30 BST, and the match is being broadcast live in the UK on ITV and STV.

WHICH FORMER REDS ARE PLAYING?

Ex-United stars Gary Neville and Teddy Sheringham will play for the England team in this fixture. Their squad also includes fellow former England internationals Jamie Carragher, Joe Cole and David James, as well as British Olympic athlete Mo Farah.

Meanwhile, Dimitar Berbatov and Patrice Evra will line up for the Soccer Aid World XI at the London Stadium. They will be joined by other football legends such as Cafu and Andrea Pirlo, as well as eight-time Olympic gold-medallist sprinter Usain Bolt.

Berbatov, Evra and Neville, who captained the Reds, all started last month's Legends of the North charity match against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

ENGLAND STARS DONATE TO SOCCER AID

The Daily Mail has reported that the England squad, led by Harry Kane and United captain Harry Maguire, have donated a huge sum of money to Soccer Aid ahead of the fixture.

The newspaper states Kane and Maguire led an initiative within the camp and players made a private donation, believed to be just under six figures, to the charity.

In addition to the donation, Gareth Southgate’s squad have also recorded a video message which will be broadcast on ITV as part of their coverage this evening.
