Fred fired up for 'clasico' matches

Tuesday 07 February 2023 12:00

Manchester United midfielder Fred says there is always loads of anticipation and build-up to matches with Leeds United.

The Brazil international has fond memories of taking on the Yorkshiremen, as he has scored home and away against our rivals from across the Pennines.

He netted in both Premier League fixtures with the Whites last term, in the 5-1 win at Old Trafford and 4-2 triumph at Elland Road.

As he looks to add to his tally of four strikes in 2022/23, and build on another impressive display in the tense 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace last weekend, Fred discussed the magnitude of the fixture.

"Games against Leeds are another 'clasico' of English football, a really important derby," Fred told club media in an exclusive interview, which featured in United Review. "Whenever we come up against them, everyone's talking about it in the week leading up to the game.

"Scoring in this fixture is great, a wonderful feeling seeing the fans jumping, you can feel their excitement. It's really satisfying scoring in these games, as I've said before, I hope to score more of these goals."

Morale is high going into the double header, as the Reds look to maintain our Premier League push, before embarking on the first part of our Europa League adventure with Barcelona.

February is a packed month in terms of scheduling but Fred, like his team-mates, is embracing the run of fixtures.

"Exactly, there are a lot of games coming up," he said. "I hope we can do our best in these upcoming fixtures.

"We're still competing in all competitions, we have to continue doing our best. Of course, when we score, we'll celebrate our goals with the fans, run towards the cameras.

"This is to make everyone happy and for the fans to be behind us at all times."
