Fred: Garnacho can be one of the best

Thursday 02 March 2023 07:00

Manchester United midfielder, Fred, says he is ‘proud’ to be part of the current squad as he revealed his high expectations of Alejandro Garnacho.

Our no.17 was on the scoresheet for the sixth time this season when he netted the third in our 3-1 win over West Ham on Wednesday evening, and he’s relishing playing alongside his current United team-mates, offering real words of encouragement to Garnacho, who hit the second strike.

“I’m proud to be a part of this squad because everyone is ready to work, to change the game, and it was a big win today,” he told club media at full-time.

“We played very well after we conceded, we came back and won this game. It’s important, we need to keep going.

"Garnacho had a very good game today, a good score, and he had nice play. He's a young player. He will be one of the best players in the world, for sure. Today, he scored and played well and he needs to keep going."

Fred: We must always believe

Goalscorer Fred reacts to our West Ham win and looks ahead to the quarter-final with Fulham...

Fred and his team-mates are seamlessly adopting the ‘never-say-die’ attitude that has been so prominent in the club’s history regardless of the opponents we a’re up against.

Even after going behind against the Hammers, he always believed there was a route back into the tie, saying: “Always [I believed we’d win]. We need to believe because we have a good team, good players, we have strong players up front but also at the back as well.

“We need to believe every game,” he added. “We conceded a goal today but we know we can score a goal because our [attack] is strong and we keep believing.”
Erik ten Hag’s side are averaging a game every three to four days, and came into this fixture on the back of winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday.

“It’s difficult [to keep performing at a high level],” Fred admitted. “Sometimes we are 1-0 down and we need to keep going, keep playing, keep [our] discipline and we do this [win].

“The squad is important, players come into the game and change it, and it’s important to win.”
Fred scored his sixth of the season on Wednesday evening.
Playing a bit further forward in Ten Hag’s system, Fred has proven quite the hit in front of goal this season.

“It’s very good to score,” he told club media with an infectious smile.

“It’s always important to help my team-mates, in front of the fans more importantly.

“I need to keep going, keep working, keep smiling, and when it’s possible, score as well!”
