Fred selected for Copa America

Thursday 10 June 2021 13:30

Fred has been included in Brazil's 24-man squad for the upcoming Copa America tournament.

The Manchester United midfielder will bolster manager Tite’s midfield options heading into the competition with 13 caps now to his name following back-to-back appearances against Ecuador and Paraguay in the last five days.

The 28-year-old, who featured heavily for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this season, will hope his national team can add to their nine previous Copa America successes when the tournament kicks off this weekend.

Fred played 48 games for United during 2020/21, but in which game did his personal highlight come? Let's find out...

With the full squad announcement made yesterday, there was unfortunately to be no place for United left-back Alex Telles, with Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi and Juventus’ Alex Sandro included instead.

As the host nation and current holders of the competition, Brazil will kick off the proceedings this Sunday by hosting Venezuela (22:00 GMT). Colombia against Ecuador completes the first day's action.
The games were eventually given the green light earlier this week, after the original co-hosts Argentina and Colombia withdrew due to rising coronavirus fears. Five-time world champions Brazil agreed to step in and stage the tournament instead.

Brazil squad: Alisson (Liverpool), Ederson (Manchester City), Weverton (Palmerias); Alex Sandro (Juventus), Renan Lodi (Atletico Madrid), Marquinhos (PSG), Felipe (Atletico Madrid), Thiago Silva (Chelsea), Militao (Real Madrid), Danilo (Juventus), Emerson (Barcelona); Fabinho (Liverpool), Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa), Casemiro (Real Madrid), Fred (Manchester United), Paqueta (Olympique Lyonnais), Everton Ribeiro (Flamengo); Neymar (PSG), Vinicus (Real Madrid), Everton (Benfica), Roberto Firmino (Liverpool), Gabriel Barbosa (Flamengo), Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City), Richarlison (Everton).
