Fred can bring the steel against the Blades

Saturday 23 November 2019 22:30

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes Fred can pick up from where he left off before the international break, when he put one of his best displays in a Manchester United shirt.

The Brazilian midfielder helped the Reds to claim an impressive victory over Brighton and Hove Albion and now he'll be tasked with doing the same in this weekend's clash with Sheffield United.

“I think he’s finding his feet and he’s enjoying himself," said Solskjaer in his pre-match press conference for the Sunday newspapers.

"Fred has creativity and tenacity too, because he’s a good ball winner.”

From the kick-off time to team news, here's everything you need to know about our trip to Bramall Lane.

It hasn’t always been easy for Fred since he joined us from Shakhtar Donesk in the summer of 2018 but he is now set to equal his longest run of consecutive games for the club.

Since making his first appearance in the Premier League this season as a substitute against Leicester City, he has been involved in every matchday squad - 14 of them - and has started eight out of the last nine games.

“For me, Fred did well to start with, then he hit a difficult period,” reflected Ole. “Then when I came in, he found it hard. Then he had a very good period and now he’s having a very good period again.

“He’s showing what we see in him. He’s more confident, he believes more in himself.

"He has come into a new country, a new club, the biggest club in the world. He’s learning the language, he’s speaking good English now, so I don’t have to speak very slowly when we talk to him. You can see in training that he’s happy.”
With key midfield players like Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic all not expected to be involved this Sunday, this could be Fred’s opportunity to really step up as the main man in our engine room against the Blades with his ability to win the ball and play it forward.

The Brazilian has shown the manager in recent games what his strengths are, and while it remains to be seen who Solskjaer will select and how he’ll set up his side at Bramall Lane, his recent praise indicates that Fred could play a leading role.
