Luke Shaw

Shaw to miss England v Denmark

Wednesday 19 June 2024 19:10

Gareth Southgate has ruled Luke Shaw out of England’s Euro 2024 meeting with Denmark on Thursday.

Shaw missed the Three Lions’ tournament opener against Serbia as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury which has kept him out of action since 18 February.

Jude Bellingham scored the only goal of the game in Gelsenkirchen to put the 2020 finalists in control of Group C.

Luke, who has made 31 appearances for his country, scoring three goals, is the only natural left-back in the 26-man group for the tournament and will hope to be involved at some point over the next few weeks.

The 28-year-old has been training intermittently with the other members of the squad as he continues his recovery programme and Southgate added that his progress is as expected.

Erik ten Hag's Reds will begin and end the new league campaign at Old Trafford.

“Luke won’t be involved tomorrow, no,” said Southgate on Wednesday evening. “He’s actually on track to where we thought he’d be originally.

“We were hoping, a couple of days ago, we might accelerate that a little bit, but he needs a bit more volume work.

“He didn’t train with the rest of the group today, because there are days when he needs to do more than the rest of the group and there are days when he needs to recover when the others are pushing.

“He’s still in and out with the others but operating on his own programme as well.”

Kobbie Mainoo is the other Red in the England squad and the 19-year-old was introduced as a substitute in the closing stages of the Serbia contest.

Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund could start for Denmark again, and the former is looking to double his tally for the tournament having scored in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Slovenia.
