United pair in Carsley's England squad

Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have been named in interim England manager Lee Carsley's first squad.

Carsley has stepped up from the Under-21s to take over the reins at senior level, following Gareth Southgate's departure in the wake of the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Mainoo played in that game in Berlin and had a very influential tournament after breaking into the set-up on the back of his outstanding work for United last season.

Maguire had been a key figure at the heart of the Three Lions' defence under Southgate but was forced to miss the finals due to injury.

However, our no.5 has regained full fitness and was arguably the outstanding performer in our opening-day victory against Fulham at Old Trafford. The centre-back will be looking to add to his 63 caps but this will be the first time he has represented his country at senior level without Southgate being in charge.

Luke Shaw was the Reds' other representative in the Euro 2024 final but he is currently sidelined with a calf problem.

England are away to Republic of Ireland on 7 September before entertaining Finland at Wembley three days later, in the UEFA Nations League.

There is also a first senior call-up for former United Academy star Angel Gomes, who currently plays his football in Ligue 1 for Lille.

The 23-year-old left the Reds for France back in 2020 and has been a regular feature in Carsley's Under-21 side with the Three Lions.
Angel Gomes made ten senior appearances for United.
