Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Harry Maguire will be Manchester United’s new captain.

The 26-year-old has been skipper for the Reds on 12 occasions this season and, with Ashley Young on the verge of a move to Inter Milan, the boss said he will now lead the team out on a permanent basis.

“Harry has been wearing the captain's armband and he will keep wearing it,” Solskjaer told reporters at the Aon Training Complex.

The boss provides an update on the fitness of Marcus Rashford ahead of United's visit to Anfield.

David De Gea, Axel Tuanzebe, Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford have also captained the side this season, while Jesse Lingard took the armband for our trip to Astana, when Ole opted to play a youthful XI.

Although Maguire only joined the club from Leicester City in August, Ole suggested the England international had made an instant impact on the rest of the squad.

“He's come in and been a leader in the group. I've been, not surprised, but I've been impressed by his leadership skills, so Harry will keep on wearing the armband.

“He's come in and everything about him tells me he is a leader. He's part of a group that we've had, that have been leading this young group.

“Ashley has been of course, Marcus is a young lad, but also David, Harry. So Harry will keep on wearing the armband now.”

Sunday will be Maguire's first trip to Anfield as a United player, although he has good memories of the ground from his time at Leicester City.

He scored the equaliser for the Foxes in a 1-1 draw there in February 2019, which is the last instance of the Merseysiders dropping points at home in the Premier League.
