Maguire's record-busting header

Thursday 25 April 2024 18:30

While Manchester United's Premier League victory against Sheffield United saw Bruno Fernandes claim the biggest headlines – the Portuguese’s brace making it seven goals for him in five appearances in April – it was also a noteworthy night for Harry Maguire.

That’s because the defender’s equaliser, a brilliant glancing header beyond Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham after 42 minutes, not only saw our no.5 score in back-to-back United games for the first time, but it also brought up an impressive benchmark in England’s top flight.

The goal was the 1,085th of the current Premier League campaign, beating the all-time record for a 20-team season in the competition, set as recently as 2022/23. And with a further seven goals scored elsewhere on Wednesday evening, that figure now stands at 1,092, with 45 games still to play at the time of writing.

That’s an average of 3.26 goals per game, for what’s proving to be a highly entertaining season – certainly for the neutrals, even if the 20 top-flight managers would no doubt wish for a few more clean sheets!

The result of Wednesday’s game also saw our opponents gain an unwanted record, with Chris Wilder’s side now having conceded the most goals in a single 38-game Premier League season (92), and the South Yorkshire side having four fixtures left to play.

For Harry, it capped an impressive few days, following his thumping header in the Emirates FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City at Wembley last Sunday.

His latest goal – his 11th for our club – came against his boyhood team, and with him also netting for us against the Blades in 2021, it means Sheffield United are the side Harry has netted most Premier League goals against (two, level with Newcastle United).

Maguire's 2023/24 tally of four goals is also a personal best in a single season with the Reds, and he's now only two short of his best campaign ever in front of goal (six, for Sheffield United in 2013/14).

And to cap it all, it came on the night when the experienced 31-year-old – who is approaching 600 senior games for club and country – was the cover star for the official match programme, United Review. Some things are just meant to be!
