“Proud and honoured”

Harry Maguire has spoken of his pride at being a Manchester United player – and our captain – as he celebrates his two-year anniversary at the club today.

The 28-year-old joined the Reds on 5 August 2019 and has been a tower of strength for us at the back ever since.

After a superb season for United during 2020/21, our no.6 excelled at Euro 2020 after recovering from the ankle ligament damage he suffered late on in the campaign.

We sat down with the skipper at the team’s pre-season training camp in St Andrews and he reflected on the honour he feels at being a Red and insisted he wants to build further on his time here.

United squad: We'll keep taking the knee

The players release a statement after vowing to take the knee again in 2021/22.

“It’s been two years during which I’ve been really proud and honoured to wear this badge,” he beamed.

“The first memory was excitement and just feeling really proud to join the biggest club in the world. I was excited to go and play in front of Old Trafford and the Chelsea game was a great first memory [on my debut].

“I’m still improving as a player and I feel like we’re developing as a team as well and that’s the most important thing - developing and winning football matches. It’s only two years into my Manchester United career and I fully expect to be here for a lot longer.”

Harry rejoined his United team-mates for the training camp in Scotland having had his summer break after the Euros.

The players have been putting in the hard yards on the training pitch in the last few days and weeks and Harry says everyone can’t wait to get started again, as the new campaign edges ever closer.

“It’s been a great few days to start with,” said Harry. “It’s a great setting, right on the golf course, although we’ve not played much golf! [Smiles]

“We’re working hard and we’re 10 days away from the season starting so our preparations are going on – we need to make sure we’re ready and focused, and mentally ready for a long, tough season, but an enjoyable one.”
