Maguire: Old Trafford has been a fortress

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has credited the club’s home supporters with helping to turn Old Trafford into a fortress this season.

The Reds possess an excellent home record under Erik ten Hag, with 26 victories, four draws and only two defeats in 32 games so far this season in all competitions. We are currently on a 29-game unbeaten run on home soil this season following Thursday’s 4-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League.

Ten Hag’s side have the chance to add to that remarkable feat on Sunday as Fulham visit the Theatre of Dreams for our final league game of 2022/23, before attention quickly switches to the Emirates FA Cup final with Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 3 June.

In a recent interview with club’s official programme, United Review, Maguire spoke highly of the raucous atmosphere created by the United faithful and the positive impact they have on the players.

“Our fans are so important, they follow us all over the country, home and away,” Maguire stated.

“But at Old Trafford, if you’re going to be successful as a team, you need to make sure your home is hard for people to come and get results at, and this season that’s what we’ve done.

“We’d had some big performances, big results, and we’ve played at a consistent level here. The fans are really important to that because we know when we get the fans with us, and they’ve been with us all season, they can make a big difference.

“We know how special it’s been at Old Trafford this season.

“It’s been a real fortress for us.”

The Reds have registered a number of standout victories in M16 this season, including league triumphs over Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as February’s memorable 2-1 win against Barcelona in the Europa League.

As the season draws to a close, United’s no.5 has his own message for our energetic supporters, crediting the part they have played at Old Trafford - and on the road - throughout an action-packed campaign.

“[I want to say] a big thank you for your support,” Harry said. “You’ve been with us all the way through the season, home and away, and you’ve been loud.

United have joined 25 other sides in the hat, as it stands, for next season's group-stage draw.

“As you have seen, our record at Old Trafford has been amazing and a big part of that is you being behind us and creating that 12th man; creating that energy in the stadium.

“So, a huge thanks for your support and hopefully we can put smiles on your faces from now until the end of the season.”
