How United reached 100 goals this season

Monday 15 May 2023 13:00

The ball hit the back of the opposition net for the 100th time this season, when Alejandro Garnacho sealed Manchester United's 2-0 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.

Garnacho’s effort, which kissed the right-hand post before settling in the opposite corner, rubber-stamped another Old Trafford victory and ushered in a century of goals in 2022/23 for the Reds.

It’s the 37th campaign in the club's history in which we have scored 100 or more times and, although we are still some way off the record 143 goals notched by the Busby Babes in 1956/57, there will be plenty of opportunities to increase our tally with four games remaining in the schedule.

Here’s how Erik ten Hag’s side racked up the century…

BY PLAYER

Sixteen different Reds have made it on to the scoresheet this season and Marcus Rashford leads the way by some distance, having already beaten his personal best for a single term by netting 29 times. Bruno Fernandes is the only other United player to make it to double figures (11), but Anthony Martial and Antony (both eight) will hope to join him in the coming weeks.

Jadon Sancho and Fred have weighed in with six goals each, while both Casemiro and Garnacho are on five. That's also the number of own goals scored in our favour - Alexis Mac Allister, Jacob Ramsey, Conor Coady, Jules Kounde and Nayef Aguerd were the unlucky players to put past their own keeper.

Our other scorers in the century are Scott McTominay, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcel Sabitzer (all 3), Diogo Dalot, Christian Eriksen, Wout Weghorst (2), Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw (1).

BY COMPETITION

We’ve been involved in four different competitions this season and it makes sense that the one that takes up the bulk of the schedule – the Premier League – is responsible for over half the total efforts.

United have scored 51 times in 35 games and, although that is one of our lowest tallies in the Premier League since its inception in 1992, it’s been enough to keep us in the top four for the majority of the term so far.

The Reds departed the Europa League in the quarter-finals but managed to score 21 goals across 12 matches, while the remainder of the tally is split between the Carabao Cup (16) and FA Cup (12) – two competitions we made it to the final of.

United’s home form has been formidable this season and 65 of our 100 goals have been greeted by the roar of the Old Trafford crowd.

Ten Hag will be wanting to improve the away record next year, though, as we’ve only managed 33 goals in our 25 matches on the road.

The remaining two goals of course came at Wembley in February, with Casemiro and Rashford firing us to glory in the Carabao Cup final. Fingers crossed for some more when we face Manchester City in the FA Cup decider on 3 June!

BY HALF

The Reds have been stronger before the break in recent weeks, but that’s not the story over the course of the season, as only 36 of our 100 goals have arrived in the opening 45 minutes.

We’ve been stronger in the second half – particularly at home. An incredible 45 of this season’s goals have arrived after the interval at the Theatre of Dreams.

Don’t leave the stadium early is the moral of the story here!

BY KIT

Finally, what does the breakdown look like across each of this season’s three adidas kits?

A whopping 84 of the 100 goals have been scored in United’s classic red – that’s no surprise really, as it’s the shirt we’ve worn in 45 of the 58 games played in 2022/23.

The white away jersey has been responsible for 14 goals, while just two have been scored in the green third strip. If you want to test your friends, Fernandes and Garnacho were the players to net in that particular colour.

All stats correct as of 15 May.
