How we will remember the Munich Air Disaster

Wednesday 05 February 2025 16:00

Thursday 6 February will mark 67 years since the Munich Air Disaster, the darkest day in our history, where 23 people, including eight Manchester United players and three officials, tragically lost their lives.

Forever in our hearts, we have been paying tribute to those who died and were injured across our recent men’s, women’s and Academy fixtures.

In addition, there will be dedicated remembrance services held both at Old Trafford and in Munich on the anniversary itself.

MATCH DAY TRIBUTES

Ruben Amorim and Marc Skinner led tributes on behalf of the club on respective matchdays, laying commemorative wreaths before kick-off. Our players also wore black armbands to pay their respects.

United’s men’s team remembered Munich on Sunday 2 February at our Premier League home fixture against Crystal Palace. Flags flew at half-mast and the families of the Busby Babes also attended the game.

A matchday memorial service took place under the Munich clock at 12:00 GMT. It featured poems, songs and readings by representatives from the Academy and Manchester United Foundation.

Fans also took their seats earlier than usual for the Flowers of Manchester, which played 15 minutes before kick-off. The We’ll Never Die surfer banner was displayed across the lower Stretford End at walkout.

As the closest home match to the anniversary, United’s women’s team honoured Munich on Sunday 26 January at Leigh Sports Village.

The North Stand was adorned with Munich flags and supporters arrived early in the stadium for a Flowers of Manchester tribute.

MUNICH SERVICE

On Thursday 6 February, remembrance services will take place both in Munich and at Old Trafford.

The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation will be leading the ceremony at Manchesterplatz, accompanied by director of fan engagement, Rick McGagh, and club ambassador, Andrew Cole.  The service will start at 1.45pm GMT.

Supporters can watch footage from the service via MUTV later in the day.

At Old Trafford, the 67th anniversary service will take place from 14:45 GMT and supporters are invited to congregate under the Munich clock at 2.40pm.

Roy Cavanagh MBE, will open with his memories of the Busby Babes, followed by former United player, Alex Stepney, sharing how the club grieved, recovered and rebuilt to 1968. Representatives from the Under-13 boys and girls will participate in the service and Manchester United Foundation will close the ceremony with a poem.

Representatives from our respective senior teams, Academy sides and club officials will attend.

The International Suite, located in the Stretford End, will be opened following the service for supporters to stay and share memories, and tea/coffee will be available. There will be an opportunity to share stories about the Busby Babes on camera with members of our editorial team.

We will always remember them:
