How many changes will Erik ten Hag make against West Ham?

Manchester United’s FA Cup fifth-round tie versus West Ham on Wednesday comes hot on the heels of our Carabao Cup final win against Newcastle.

The Hammers travel to Old Trafford for a 19:45 GMT kick-off, with Erik ten Hag’s side looking to progress in another of the four competitions up for grabs this year, having already added one to the trophy cabinet.

But will United’s side see many changes amid the busy fixture schedule, for a game that comes three days on from the Carabao Cup final and four before a Premier League away match at Liverpool.

The boss identifies a couple of doubts for the Emirates FA Cup fifth-round tie with West Ham.

EXPECTING ERIK TO SWITCH THINGS UP

I think Erik will make a handful of changes, to freshen things up and give some of the regular starters a rest. He said in his pre-match press conference that Luke Shaw and Fred are doubts, so don’t be surprised if Tyrell Malacia and Marcel Sabitzer are both selected from the off.

I can see Ten Hag also making a couple of further alterations, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho all among the substitutes in Sunday’s final.

Whatever players Erik selects, I have no doubt that he will have prepared his side correctly, as he always does.

MOMENTUM COULD BE A KEY FACTOR

The boss has shown many times in the past that he is not one for heavy rotation, the home cup matches versus Reading and Nottingham Forest provided further evidence of this, and I suspect he’ll want to keep the momentum going heading into the game against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

It’s a good job because West Ham were given a huge shot of confidence from their surprisingly comfortable win over Forest at the weekend and they are always obdurate opponents. If there are some changes, I reckon there is a chance we might see Tyrell Malacia, Marcel Sabitzer, Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho start, but I wouldn’t anticipate a completely different XI to the one on duty at Wembley.

Ten Hag's bullish message to the squad

“The players who form the best teams will play,” says the boss before another hectic month of fixtures.

THE FOCUS WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY

Speaking in the first part of his pre-match press conference earlier today, Erik relayed the message that United’s focus is firmly on Wednesday’s tie, after Sunday’s Carabao Cup success and ahead of this weekend’s Premier League visit to Anfield.

Therefore, I think that we will see minimal changes tomorrow night, as the Reds look to ensure a smooth passage into the next round of the FA Cup. Despite their misfortunes this season, David Moyes’s side are often a tough opponent, so I think the boss will look to draw on our recent momentum by not shaking things up too much, as we eye progression towards the latter stages of another competition.

Although I can’t foresee too much changing from the Wembley starting XI, if the doubtful duo of Luke Shaw and Fred are unavailable, I think Tyrell Malacia and Marcel Sabitzer could return.
