How to watch and follow United v Rangers

Tuesday 21 January 2025 13:46

Manchester United’s European campaign resumes on Thursday evening, with an all-British affair against Rangers at Old Trafford.

Our first competitive meeting with the Scottish titans in 15 years is an eagerly anticipated fixture, with both sides currently occupying two of the eight automatic qualifying slots in the Europa League.

While the Reds have had a difficult time of it in the Premier League this season, we’re unbeaten in continental competition, having won three and drawn three of our six games so far.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the seventh match, as the Glasgow giants come to town…

TEAM NEWS

Luke Shaw is nearing a return from injury, and Ruben Amorim could provide an update on the left-back when he holds his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon. Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof and Mason Mount have also been sidelined since December.

Marcus Rashford who, like Casemiro, is one booking away from a European suspension, has not played since the 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in our last continental outing.

Rangers rotated heavily for Sunday’s 5-0 cup win over Highland League outfit Fraserburgh, although skipper Jamies Tavernier started for the first time since late December after injury.

Mohamed Diomande is suspended, having picked up three cautions in the league phase, while Jack Butland – who had a loan spell at Old Trafford without playing two seasons ago – is a doubt having been hospitalised due to internal bleeding recently.

Another former Red, in Tom Lawrence, has been sidelined since the autumn, while Rangers have added Lille loanee Rafael Fernandes to their ranks, following injuries to defenders John Souttar and Dujon Sterling.

FORM GUIDE

United’s domestic struggles have been well documented, but it’s been a different story in Europe, where we sit seventh and well-placed to qualify automatically for the round of 16.

Draws with Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce have been followed by the victory over PAOK, courtesy of Amad’s double, and the Rasmus Hojlund-inspired successes against Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen.

Rangers have had a tough time of it in league football too, and they are currently 13 points adrift of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, despite beating their great rivals 3-0 at the start of January.

The Gers were runners-up to their neighbours in December’s Scottish League Cup final but have enjoyed their Europa League campaign so far.

A well-earned 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham and an eye-catching 4-1 win in Nice are the highlights of their six games, so far, and their tally of 11 points is just one shy of our own total.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Rasmus Hojlund is the leading scorer in the competition, but Rangers forward Hamza Igamane is only one goal behind his total of five.

The Morocco youth international was a budget buy in the summer and has proved a shrewd addition in recent weeks, netting in the aforementioned games against Nice and Tottenham, plus he has nine strikes in the Scottish Premiership.

Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny have also been among the goals for the Glasgow club, hitting double figures across all competitions.

Tavernier has been a talisman for the Gers ever since joining in 2015, when they were in the second tier. Despite playing primarily at right-back, the former Newcastle United man has scored an astonishing 128 goals for the club, with penalties and free-kicks his speciality.

Hamza Igamane has scored 13 goals in 25 games this season.
