How to watch and follow United Women v Liverpool

Friday 15 December 2023 11:00

Manchester United Women face Liverpool in the WSL at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday for our final game of the year.

Marc Skinner's side will be looking to make it two wins out of two this week following our 3-1 win at home to Leicester in the Continental Tyres League Cup on Thursday.

Lucia Garcia, Lisa Naalsund and a Katie Zelem penalty ensured the Reds kept up our 100 per cent winning record in the Conti Cup this season.

TEAM NEWS

Skinner has no fresh injury concerns and is likely to have the same squad available as the last two games, against Tottenham and Leicester.

Irene Guerrero and Hinata Miyazawa are both expected to miss the Liverpool clash, while Emma Watson, Gabby George Jessica Simpson, Aoife Mannion and Evie Rabjohn remain long-term absentees.

For the visitors, midfielder Miri Taylor will be available after missing her side's 2-1 Conti Cup victory at Everton in midweek through suspension.

Forward Natasha Flint could return after missing the last two games with an ankle problem, while defender Jasmine Matthews (hamstring) and forward Mia Enderby (concussion) are likely to miss out.

Skinner will be hoping to round off 2023 with three points against Liverpool on Sunday.

THE OPPOSITION

It won't only be bragging rights on the line this weekend as just three points separate both sides in the league table, with United currently fourth on 18 points and Liverpool fifth on 15 points.

The Red half of Merseyside have adjusted well to life in the top flight after gaining promotion last year by achieving a seventh-place finish in 2022/23. They will now be out to prove they can challenge teams further up the table this campaign.

Striker Sophie Haug will be one to watch for United's backline - the 24-year-old has four goals and two assists to her name in nine appearances across all competitions this season.

RECENT MEETINGS

Both sides recently crossed paths in the Conti Cup last month at Prenton Park, as Nikita Parris struck in the first-half to claim a 1-0 victory for Skinner's side.

In this fixture last season, United put on a fine display to beat Liverpool 6-0 at Leigh Sports Village, with goals from Garcia, Alessia Russo, Hayley Ladd, Emma Koivisto (own-goal), Martha Thomas and Rachel Williams.

Garcia was on the scoresheet once more in a 1-0 triumph away from home, as we completed the league double over our rivals on the last day of the 22/23 campaign.
