How to watch and follow Newport v United

Wednesday 24 January 2024 12:00

Manchester United return to action in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday, travelling across the border to Wales, where League Two outfit Newport County await.

The Reds' last fixture was on Sunday 14 January, the 2-2 draw with Tottenham and, after a week off due to the Premier League's winter break, our first match back is in a competition where we reached the final last term.

Erik ten Hag's side defeated Wigan Athletic 2-0 in the previous round and, after winning their replay against Eastleigh, Newport set up Sunday's tie at Rodney Parade.

Ahead of the first-ever competitive meeting between United and the Exiles, get all the essential information for what is being billed as a classic FA Cup encounter.

TEAM NEWS

The winter break was another opportunity for some of our players to continue their recovery from injuries, with Lisandro Martinez coming on as a substitute against Tottenham, while Casemiro was on the bench in a welcome boost for Ten Hag.

Returning to training this week were Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, while Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Anthony Martial remain out.

Sofyan Amrabat and Andre Onana are away with Morocco and Cameroon, respectively, at the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

Erik may give an update on the status of his squad when he conducts his pre-match press conference on Friday.

The only long-term absentee for Newport is centre-back Josh Seberry, but Graham Coughlan is expected to provide further information on his team ahead of the weekend.

What can United expect from Newport?

The Reds travel to Rodney Parade next weekend, with the onus on securing a spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

FORM GUIDE

United enter Sunday's match having drawn at Old Trafford against Spurs last time out, with Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford getting on the scoresheet for Ten Hag's men.

Prior to that, the Reds defeated Wigan away in the FA Cup, with Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes scoring on that occasion. Having reached the FA Cup final last term, the squad will no doubt be keen to go one better this season and get Erik his second piece of silverware in as many seasons as boss, following the 2023 Carabao Cup success.

Newport defeated 10-man Wrexham 1-0 at Rodney Parade on Saturday, with Seb Palmer-Houlden making the difference between the two Welsh sides. The result leaves the Exiles 14th in League Two and seven games unbeaten at home.

Sunday's hosts also, of course, have a history of upsets in the FA Cup, as they defeated Leicester City - then in the Premier League - and Middlesbrough in the competition in 2019, before being defeated by eventual competition winners Manchester City in the fifth round.

WHO ELSE IS PLAYING?

There are a host of big ties across the weekend, with Tottenham hosting Manchester City on Friday night in a mouth-watering all-Premier League clash.

Newcastle visit Fulham and Aston Villa face Chelsea, while National League South side Maidstone United travel to Championship high-flyers Ipswich.
