How to watch and follow United v Lyon

Thursday 13 July 2023 14:11

Manchester United’s second pre-season clash sees the Reds travel to Edinburgh to face Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday 19 July.

The second of our eight fixtures planned for the off-season will take place at BT Murrayfield and it offers our supporters a rare opportunity to watch football in the iconic home of Scottish rugby.

Coached by former United defender Laurent Blanc, the Ligue 1 outfit finished seventh in 2022/23 and they will provide a good test when the two sides lock horns.

We got off to a winning start in terms of pre-season, beating Leeds United 2-0 in Oslo on 12 July, with youngsters Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill getting on the scoresheet.

Ahead of the encounter, here are the key things you need to know...

CAN I STILL GET TICKETS?

There are still tickets available for the game in Scotland. These can be purchased from Ticketmaster.

HOW CAN YOU WATCH AND FOLLOW THE GAME?

If you can't make it to Murrayfield on 19 July, MUTV is the only place to watch all eight of our pre-season fixtures this summer.

You can see United v Lyon live on MUTV via the club channel, our United App and ManUtd.com, with exclusive pre- and post-match access to the manager and squad.

The Full 90 match replay and highlights videos will also be available via MUTV on-demand.

WHAT IS THE TEAM NEWS?

Erik ten Hag selected different XIs for each half of the clash with Leeds, and Raphael Varane and Charlie Savage captained the respective sides.

Mason Mount made his first United appearance in the opening period, while Lisandro Martinez returned from a three-month injury lay-off as the boss selected his most experienced players first. Fred missed the game as a precaution, while several Reds stayed behind to work on individual programmes at the training ground.

A youthful team took to the pitch for the second 45 and we may see more of the same for the Lyon game. Ten Hag revealed his international players will return to Carrington on Saturday, but 'most of them will not show up in Edinburgh' as they build carefully towards match fitness following the summer break.

Laurent Blanc's side have added defender Clinton Mata and young midfielder Skelly Alvero to their squad this summer, although a significant number of players have departed, including Houssem Aouar, Jerome Boateng and Moussa Dembele.

Malo Gusto, who joined Chelsea in January before being loaned back to France for the remainder of the season, has now left for Stamford Bridge permanently.

When is the rest of United's squad back?

PRE-SEASON SO FAR

United got off to a great start in Norway, as Ten Hag's men beat Leeds 2-0 at the Ullevaal Stadion.

The Reds dominated proceedings but didn't break the deadlock until the 67th minute, through Emeran's first-time finish. The French forward, who had been introduced at the break as one of 11 changes, then turned provider for Joe Hugill to strike our second nine minutes from time.

Lyon's summer campaign begins on Friday 14 July, with a friendly against Dutch side De Treffers.

They are currently in the Netherlands on a training camp, but will visit RWD Molenbeek, Celta Vigo and Crystal Palace before the start of the domestic term in August.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

Having only faced OL four times in our history, the Reds hold something of an impressive record, failing to have ever lost a game against Les Gones.

Our last clash came some 15 years ago, as the two teams locked horns in the 2008 Champions League round of 16. United advanced 2-1 on aggregate, with Cristiano Ronaldo's decisive goal in the second leg at Old Trafford proving pivotal in a 1-0 win.

Prior to that, we played out a 1-1 draw at Stade Gerland, with Karim Benzema opening the scoring before Carlos Tevez levelled late on.

We also met in the group stages of the 2004/05 edition of the competition, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side first drawing 2-2 before a 2-1 victory in M16 secured our progression as group runners-up.
