How to watch and follow West Ham v United

Friday 05 May 2023 10:37

Manchester United are back in Premier League action this weekend when we head to London to face West Ham.

It is the third time the Reds have come face-to-face with David Moyes’s side this term - the first of which was our 1-0 win in the league, before a 3-1 victory en route to the FA Cup final.

Erik ten Hag’s men will be hoping to bounce back from Thursday’s narrow defeat at Brighton, when Alexis Mac Allister’s late saw the home side clinch all three points.

Here are all the key details you need to know ahead of our clash with the Hammers in the capital…

WHAT’S THE TEAM NEWS?

United fans may have to way just a little while longer before we see Alejandro Garnacho back in action. The exciting winger, fresh from signing a new long-term contract with the club, re-joined team training last week, but Ten Hag said before Thursday's Brighton match that he believes Garnacho needs a few more sessions before making a full return.

The boss may provide a further update on the fitness of the 18-year-old Argentinian in his pre-match press conference ahead of our clash with West Ham on Friday.

Scott McTominay and Raphael Varane remain unavailable for this one, as Erik stated in his pre-Brighton media briefing on Wednesday, though the boss previously said he is hopeful that Varane will return before the end of the campaign.

Donny van de Beek  - who recently said he was "not far away" from being back - and Lisandro Martinez working towards returning in time for the beginning of the 2023/24 season.

West Ham will be hoping to welcome back a handful of first-team members after multiple players were forced to miss their 3-0 midweek loss to Manchester City due to illness. Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek, and Nayef Aguerd were among those affected by the virus outbreak in the Hammers' camp, and could be in line to return on Sunday.

Vladimir Coufal had to be replaced in that loss at the Etihad Stadium after a hamstring concern, while Kurt Zouma and Gianluca Scamacca are set to be unavailable for Sunday's meeting with the Reds.

Ten Hag is hopeful that Raphael Varane will be back before the season ends.
FORM GUIDE

The Reds come into this game in search of three points to boost our chances of securing Champions League football for next season. After a slim defeat to Brighton in midweek, Ten Hag will no doubt be looking for a reaction from his players to earn what would be our 20th win in the league this term.

West Ham, on the other hand, have been drawn into a relegation fight at the bottom of the table where every point counts. In 15th, Moyes’s men are just four points above 18th-placed Nottingham Forest. The Hammers have suffered three defeats since their last win and will be looking to take one step closer to Premier League safety by picking up points against the Champions League-chasing Reds.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME WE MET?

The last time we went head-to-head in the league, a sole Marcus Rashford goal was the difference. Our no.10 nodded home emphatically from a sublime Christian Eriksen cross just before half-time.

Our fifth-round FA Cup encounter provided goals aplenty in comparison, where Ten Hag’s men ran out 3-1 winners in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

Said Benrahma opened the scoring for the visiting side 15 minutes into the second half, but an Aguerd own-goal levelled the standings with not much time to go.

Garnacho was the difference-maker in that fixture, producing a superb strike that edged United ahead in the 90th minute, one that he labelled as his favourite of the season so far in his recent new-contract interview. Fred slotted home deep into stoppage time to secure a safe passage to the next round for the Reds.
