TEAM NEWS

Ten Hag fielded a total of 21 players during the first friendly of our winter training camp against Cadiz on Wednesday. Martin Dubravka was the only player to feature for the full 90 minutes, with the 10 outfield players all being replaced at the break, as Erik shuffled the pack.

None of those substitutions seemed to be because of injury, so the Dutchman is expected to have a clean bill of health going into the second match in Spain against Real Betis.

There was one notable absentee on Wednesday night - goalkeeper David De Gea. The Spaniard was not involved in the squad against Cadiz, and Erik may give an update on the experienced stopper before this weekend’s fixture.

Of course, those who were not available for the first fixture – the Reds representing their countries at the World Cup and those following individual fitness plans (Jadon Sancho and Axel Tuanzebe) – are unavailable for this one.

FORM GUIDE

Ten Hag’s side will be looking to use the Real Betis match for more vital practice ahead of the resumption of domestic football.

The Dutchman said he saw positives in that performance, as he gave young Reds their opportunity in the United first team. Erik praised their “energy,” stating that is was a learning experience for them.

Against Betis, he will no doubt want to see his players apply that new-found knowledge against a side who currently sit sixth in La Liga.

Ten Hag: We will draw a line and move on

Erik says he and his side will not dwell on the defeat to Cadiz.

Prior to this winter training camp, the Reds were in good form. Domestically and in Europe, we had put together strong runs, signing off for the World Cup break with that memorable last-minute win away to Fulham.

Betis are performing better than their city rivals Sevilla this term, and are currently only outside the top four on goal difference.

Despite their seemingly impressive league form, Manuel Pellegrini’s side are without a win since the start of November. That’s a run of five matches in all competitions, and their last domestic victory came towards the end of last month, when they defeated Real Sociedad – whom the Reds have faced twice this term in the Europa League.

FAMILIAR FACES

The Betis side is littered with players who have plied their trade in the Premier League before, while their manager, Manuel Pellegrini, is of course known in Manchester for his stint as City boss, as well as time in charge of West Ham United.

There is another City link within Los Verdiblancos’s squad too, as goalkeeper Claudio Bravo also had a spell with our neighbours. In addition to these connections, Martin Montoya (Brighton), Victor Camarasa (Cardiff City and Crystal Palace), Juanmi (Southampton) and Willian Jose (Wolves) have all featured in the Premier League at some point in their careers.
