Victor Lindelof comes off early

Ten Hag gives update on Lindelof and Varane

Manchester United lost two centre-backs during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Brentford, with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof both departing the pitch early.

Varane was replaced at half-time by Harry Maguire, not long after the Frenchman appeared to jar his foot when blocking a goalbound effort from Bees striker Ivan Toney.

Lindelof's issue appeared, on first glance, to be a little more serious, as United's no.2 pulled up clutching his hamstring during a Brentford attack.

He had to swap out of the game for the returning Lisandro Martinez, missing a remarkable period of stoppage time, where Mason Mount gave Erik ten Hag's side the lead before Kristoffer Ajer bit back by striking a 99th-minute equaliser.

In his press conference following the game, a disappointed Ten Hag said the Reds didn't play well but had to see out the game after taking the lead.

He was also asked about the condition of both Varane and Lindelof and, while he couldn't make a clear commitment regarding severity, Erik suggested the former was sacrificed just to be on the safe side.

“I can’t tell by now,” he said.

“Rapha we took him off as a precaution at half-time and Victor he came off but we have to assess him tomorrow.”

Ten Hag confirmed that Alejandro Garnacho was "okay" when he was substituted for Antony on the hour mark, with the Argentina international having travelled back this week from Los Angeles, where he played 71 minutes for Argentina on Tuesday evening.

There were a couple of positives in terms of fitness news for the Reds, in the shape of Martinez's return and Casemiro's comeback from a one-game absence.

The Brazilian assisted Mount's goal with a calm, measured pass before joining in with the celebrations which would, ultimately, not last.
