Ten Hag's update on Varane and Evans

Thursday 04 April 2024 23:34

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has issued an update on centre-back duo Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans, after both were forced off in our 4-3 defeat at Chelsea on Thursday.

Varane and Evans were both passed fit to be part of United's squad at Stamford Bridge, with the former starting alongside Harry Maguire, and Evans among the substitutes.

But as the first half approached its conclusion, with the sides locked at 2-2 thanks to goals from Conor Gallagher, Cole Palmer, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, it became evident that Evans's introduction was imminent.

The Northern Ireland international replaced Varane for the start of the second half but, after 21 minutes on the pitch, he had to be taken off for Willy Kambwala.

The Reds are agonisingly edged by the hosts in a dramatic Premier League game at Stamford Bridge.

"That doesn't help in such moments if you have to manage the game, [it helps] that there are leaders on the pitch," began Erik, in his post-match press conference.

"Also Casemiro we have to take off. That doesn't help.

"They know how to deal [with pressure] and how to bring the win over the line.

"I can't tell now what it is in prospect of Sunday but we have to take them both off."

Pressed specifically on whether Varane will be fit for the visit of Liverpool on Sunday, Ten Hag replied: "In this moment, I don't know. I can't help."

United have suffered with a series of injuries this season and on Tuesday, we confirmed that Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof will be out for at least a month.

Erik's men host Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday at 15:30 BST.
