International Reds: Guide to the friendlies

Wednesday 02 June 2021 10:30

Europe's leading football nations are gearing up for their first international tournament in three years, as the delayed Euro 2020 finally gets ready to kick off.

The 24-team competition starts on 11 June but, before that, the countries are involved in a series of friendlies and warm-up fixtures, as the various squads ramp up their preparations.

As usual, Manchester United players are heavily involved, so there's plenty for you to keep an eye on, even before the championships gets under way in Rome later this month.

Here's all the key info and dates for the international calendar, pre-Euros...
WHO'S IN ACTION?

Twelve Reds have been selected for their countries' Euro squads, and all will be keen to impress in their nations' final games before the tournament begins.

Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay are first in action, as the Netherlands meet Scotland in the Algarve this Wednesday evening. The Dutch then take on Georgia on Sunday, while Scotland travel to Luxembourg for their final pre-Euros fixture.

Gareth Southgate has selected four Reds for his England squad, and they begin their warm-up week against Austria at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough. They'll meet Romania at the same venue four days later, so watch out for Dean Henderson, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw. Jesse Lingard didn't make the final cut but will be available for the friendly on Teesside.
There are more potential head-to-heads in Nice, as France kick off their preparations by taking on Wales at the Allianz Riviera, where Paul Pogba could come up against Daniel James and Dylan Levitt.

Les Bleus complete their pre-tournament programme by hosting Bulgaria at the Stade de France on Tuesday. Wales welcome Albania to Cardiff on Saturday.

Our Iberian contingent are in action on Friday, when David De Gea and Bruno Fernandes compete at the new home of Atletico Madrid, the Wanda Metropolitano. Spain were set to continue against Lithuania on Tuesday, although a positive COVID-19 test for captain Sergio Busquets means the squad has had to isolate and the Under-21s will now fulfil the fixture. Portugal's final build up for the Euros is a match with Israel the following day.

Victor Lindelof and Sweden have just one match before Euro 2020 begins – they meet Armenia in Stockholm on Saturday.

Away from the Euros, several African Reds could also be in action. Eric Bailly and Amad are both in the Ivory Coast squad to take on Burkina Faso and Ghana.

Youngster Hannibal is in line for a senior international debut with Tunisia, as the Eagles of Carthage take on DR Congo, Algeria and Mali in Tunis.
