Former defender Jaap Stam has passed on his well wishes to Edwin van der Sar, his former Netherlands team-mate and fellow Manchester United legend.

The goalkeeping great suffered a brain hemorrhage last week and was taken to intensive care in a Croatian hospital, where he was on holiday.

Everybody at the club was shocked and upset by the news and, of course, Stam shared the same concerns.

Ajax later issued a positive update from Edwin's wife, Annemarie, that he was not in "life-threatening danger" and was in a stable condition.

Jaap Stam's thoughts are with his former Netherlands team-mate Edwin van der Sar...

Stam left United in 2001, four years before van der Sar joined, but the pair played 60 times together for the Netherlands, with the goalkeeper amassing an incredible total of 130 caps for his country.

"We all send our love to Edwin," Jaap told us. "We know him very well and it's always shocking to hear that things like this are happening now.

"Edwin has always been very sporty, you know, and he always exercises a lot. So you don't expect this to happen to a former player, and a former team-mate."

"He's been living a stressful life before, at Ajax of course, in the job that he was in [chief executive]," added the Treble winner.

"Then, probably six or seven weeks after leaving the club and being on holiday, this is happening to him and his family.

"Of course, it is a huge impact for them and for everybody that knows him, as well.

The Champions League-winning goalkeeper is in our thoughts after falling seriously ill.

"So we wish him all the love and we wish all the best to him and his family.

"Hopefully, he is going to recover well and he's going to be staying safe."

Everybody at Old Trafford would like to echo these sentiments in sending our love to Edwin and his family.
