James Garner will spend the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest after agreeing a season-long loan move to the Championship club.

The 20-year-old has also signed a new contract at Manchester United, lasting until June 2024 with the option of an additional year’s extension.

It’s a return to the City Ground for Garner who spent the second half of last season with the Midlands club, scoring four goals in 20 league games.

The midfielder won the plaudits of teammates, coaches and fans alike while playing for Chris Hughton’s side. His performances were impressive and composed, but still only 20, he will benefit from another season of regular first-team football.

The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season at Forest.

Garner, who has already featured seven times for United’s first team, has captained the Reds throughout the age groups having joined the Academy at the age of eight.

After signing his new contract, Garner spoke to club media and said:

“I’m made up, Manchester United has been a massive part of my life for over 10 years now. My ambitions are obviously to become a first-team player here. I know exactly what it takes, I’m ready to go and showcase my ability to everyone and keep on striving for all my goals.

“Signing this new contract shows the faith that the club has in me, it gives me extra motivation and means so much for me and my family.

“I want to be a big player for this club one day, that is my ultimate aim and I’ll be working every day to make that happen.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke of Garner’s ability in Friday’s press conference but admitted the midfielder would need to go out on loan to gain further experience.

“He’s done really well in pre-season, and he’s really impressed me,” the manager explained. “I think for his career, another season, or another six months now to start with, playing regularly in the Championship will help him.”

Everybody at United would like to wish James the best of luck for the season as we follow his progress at the City Ground.
