Manchester United defender James Overy has been included in the Australia senior squad for the first time.

The full-back turns 18 on Sunday and has received an early birthday present with inclusion ahead of friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia this month.

Born in Perth, he joined United in 2024 and is making good progress at Carrington.

He represented his country at the Under-20 World Cup recently and senior coach Tony Popovic, who played in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, is set to run the rule over the teenager during the course of the two games in the United States.

“It’s another opportunity to expand the depth and introduce players who have not yet been exposed to the Socceroos environment or senior international football,” Popovic said, when announcing his squad.

Overy has played for the Reds' Under-18s and Under-21s this term.

Congratulations to James, and best of luck for the upcoming internationals, with Australia already looking ahead to next year's World Cup finals in the US, Canada and Mexico.
