Evans: We can benefit from Erik's winning habit

Jonny Evans says Erik ten Hag’s winning habit is something the Manchester United squad can only benefit from.

Ten Hag has masterminded Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup triumphs during his two seasons at the club so far and is of course looking for further silverware this season.

The boss highlighted the ‘winning mentality’ of Evans’ team-mates Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho when welcoming the pair back from their success with Argentina over the summer and Evans – who knows a thing or two about lifting trophies with the Reds himself – wants more players like that in the squad, as it gives everyone confidence to progress.

“The manager has been able to do that [win trophies] since he came here, he’s got a great record in the cup competitions and he speaks highly about the fact that he is a winner. We need that,” said Jonny.

“Obviously, we’ve had a couple of lads going away with their countries in South America - Licha and Garnacho - so we’ve got winners in the squad and want to add to that.

“Winning trophies can only benefit you in terms of giving confidence to go on and win more.”

Evans made a valuable cameo at Wembley in May when replacing Martinez and helping United see out the victory over Manchester City to claim a 13th FA Cup.

That success ensured the Northern Irishman completed the set of major domestic trophies and, as a proper Red, the memory of the day is something he’ll cherish forever.

As he enters his 11th campaign with the club, Jonny isn’t done yet and has his sights set on further burnishing an impressive medal collection.

“I think the whole thing of coming back and winning a trophy with the club was incredible,” he added.

“I’ve been lucky but you always remember the last one, don’t you? I think it will stick in the memory for a long time and, hopefully, we can get another one this year and then that’s the last one to think about.

“You’re always trying to look forward. We’ve already had meetings and you see what trophies are up for grabs this year. We’ve got the Europa League to contend with as well, obviously, and we’re in all of them to win it.

“There’s another chance in the Europa League, we’re back in the cup competitions and in the league so there’s a lot and we’ll give it a good shot in all of them.”
