Mourinho's reaction to Juventus 1 United 2

Wednesday 07 November 2018 23:20

Jose Mourinho declared himself "proud" of his Manchester United side, after a sensational comeback against Juventus, which handed the Italian champions a first defeat of the season.

The Reds trailed with less than five minutes of normal time remaining, but Juan Mata's delicate free-kick and a own goal from a scramble in the penalty area swung the game dramatically back in our favour.

It was an assured display from Mourinho's men for large periods, in a hostile atmosphere against a star-studded Bianconeri team that has won the last seven Serie A titles, and not lost at home to English opposition for 15 years - since United last beat them.

THE TEAM WAS THERE FROM MINUTE ONE
"The game was a very good game, a high-level game. It doesn't matter the end. The game was really top. I think we performed at a high level. After that goal, we had five minutes to wake up again but the team was there since the first minute until the last."
I RESPECT JUVENTUS
"In a beautiful Italian way, they [the crowd] insulted me for 90 minutes. I didn’t insult them. I just made a little thing. I know the millions of Inter fans, they are really, really happy with that. But I respect Juventus, I respect their players, their manager, I respect everything, the quality they have. And I'm really, really proud of my boys because their performance was really good."
WE ROSE TO THEIR LEVEL
"A couple of our boys, they told in the interview after the game at home that they were a little bit [inferior] and I got this. I worked around that because we had to come and not feel inferior. Of course they have a different potential than us, everybody knows their ambitions are different to ours. They were in a very comfortable situation. We were in a situation where we thought we needed to go to the last second of the last match and the situation was different. But the boys, they started the game really, really well with good control of the game. They had one opportunity in the first half but everything was under control."

NOTHING WE COULD ABOUT RONALDO'S STRIKE
"Of course, they are strong, of course they have phenomenal players. Of course Cristiano can make that goal and the player that made that beautiful pass was a central defender. It was a high quality pass from a central defender so they have power and they have quality all over the park, and they have amazing bench to make fantastic changes all the time."
Victor Lindelof lets out a cathartic roar after the final whistle.
WE STILL HAVE WORK TO DO
"It's a big victory for us, not just because we need the points but because it's against a fantastic team with an amazing record at home like Juventus.

"We have a final now to play at home. We thought we were going to have two finals to play and now we have one final. And if we win that final against Young Boys, if my mathematics at the moment is right, then we qualify with a victory against Young Boys. So I think now I leave it to Old Trafford people. I hope that we arrive for the match on time. I hope we don't arrive late. We had an amazing escort here, amazing escort. Thank you so much to the Italian police. Let's hope that we arrive on time and we can get the three points against Young Boys and qualify."

'I knew I had to take the free-kick'

"Because of the venue and the importance of the game it is one my best free-kicks," admits Juan Mata...
