Zelem: Sir Bobby Charlton touched so many hearts

Manchester United Women captain Katie Zelem dedicated her side's 5-0 victory over Everton on Sunday to the late Sir Bobby Charlton.

The 86-year-old sadly passed away on Saturday and tributes have continued to pour in from all corners of the world, with Charlton's lasting legacy etched into our history.

Marc Skinner's side were in fine form as they saw off the Toffees on Merseyside in the Women's Super League, with Melvine Malard, Nikita Parris and Rachel Williams all netting at Walton Hall Park.

Zelem, who registered a vital assist for Parris's first of the afternoon, said the Reds wanted to put on a performance Sir Bobby would have been proud of.

United Women captain Katie Zelem dedicated Sunday's 5-0 win over Everton to the late Sir Bobby Charlton...

“It was such sad news and I think you can see from everyone's posts and what they said, he touched so many people's hearts,” Katie told MUTV post-match on Sunday.

“He was a real club legend and for us, we had that in our minds going into the game.

“That performance was for him.”
After hitting the front early on, Skinner's side upped the ante in the second half and scored three times in the final 20 minutes to put the game beyond any doubt.

The win extended our unbeaten start to the new WSL campaign and, afterwards, England international Zelem explained the impact that our new signings had on the afternoon, as they continue to integrate into the squad.

The Reds extended our unbeaten start to the new WSL season with victory against the Toffees.

“We obviously made nine new signings and it's about getting them in to gel with the team and learn how we play.

“I think integrating them in slowly has been really beneficial and as you can see, Ire [Irene Guerrero] making her debut, it's a totally different league to what she is used to and it's the same with Hini [Hinata Miyazawa].

“It's nice that they can start to learn how we play and they're beginning to look like they've been here forever.”
With Brighton and Hove Albion to come, as our next opponents after the international break, Katie believes that the Reds can take momentum into that fixture off the back of the high-scoring victory on Merseyside.

“I think that was us hitting our rhythm now, we have had a lot of factors this week whether it be a sickness bug, the PSG game.

“As you can see we've not got that many players around but I think we all rallied together and put a performance in that we were really proud of.”
