Key quotes from Ruben's pre-Rangers press conference
Ruben Amorim addressed journalists at Carrington on Wednesday ahead of Manchester United's UEFA Europa League fixture against Rangers at Old Trafford.
United will be looking for a response in M16 following our 3-1 defeat against Brighton on Sunday, with the onus on securing a place in the top eight and qualifying automatically for the last-16.
Rangers are expected to be backed by a vociferous travelling contingent at the Theatre of Dreams, for the first meeting between the two sides in 15 years.
Ahead of the much-anticipated contest, Amorim appeared in front of the media, along with defender Harry Maguire, earlier today.
Below are some of his stand-out quotes...
Press conference: United v Rangers
Press conference | Ruben Amorim and Harry Maguire discuss nerves and frustration, Old Trafford and Rangers...
"I think that is [clear from the games]. I could say the same things and say the same thing that we have the support of the fans, no. We are more nervous playing at home than away because we lost four games in five so it is getting harder. But we can improve and I think if we don't suffer the first goal like in the fourth minute, I remember others in the 10th minute, 15th minute, then it is really hard to calm down the team. We need the first thing, in my mind, they cannot score. We need to score the first one and if we scored the first one that would change [things] and we would play better at home in the beginning. That is it and I think we are really clear that we are anxious playing, especially at home, and we are suffering goals then it is really hard. I think it is clear for everybody that it is getting harder to play at Old Trafford."
FOCUS ON TOMORROW
"The most important thing is to think we can improve right away in the next match and then it is like that! Football can change like that and we can have a lot of ideas and thinking that things could get worse for that reason and another reason but imagine tomorrow we do not suffer a goal in the beginning and we score, we play well and then we go to Fulham and we can win it. That will change and even the environment here, everything. I don't know and what I can sense from the first day is that when I arrive and I see it that changing things, we are going to suffer and it was really clear. But in this moment I don't want to say it is going to take a lot of time, it is getting really hard and you know. You guys are here for a long time and when you get loss after loss it is hard for everybody and I know that and sometimes I show that frustration. But I hope we can change that tomorrow."
"I didn't think and I am a young guy, sometimes I make a mistake. That's why I do not talk after the game. This game, I needed to talk and maybe it was a mistake and I get more nervous and go to the press conference really nervous and you say things you shouldn't say. That is it and sometimes you are a young guy who makes mistakes, you improve. I do not promise you I won't do it again... I do not know! I will try to improve."
TRANSFER LATEST
"As I understand the question, let's focus on the game and I do' not want to talk about that, especially before a game. Our focus is that our players are here to play and we need to improve, to win games, to have that feeling of winning is important for us, so lets focus on that today."
Ruben: We can change the mood quickly
ArticleOur head coach admits he's deeply frustrated by recent performances, but knows how fast a turnaround can come...
"We expect, like Harry says, a tough match, a lot of physicality during the game. I know that some important players from Rangers will not play and we have to know the new players to understand the way that they play. They play with the full-backs really high on the pitch and they have talent to score in the final thirds. It is one more difficult game but it is important for us because we want to keep in the play-offs and we need to have that [extra] time to train. I expect the same thing we faced in the last games, a really tough match, a lot of physicality and also the fans from Rangers making some noise. So we are prepared, our fans are prepared and we want to win."
